Martinez, Palacios Collect Two Hits in Series Opener

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University baseball team got two hits each from Trey Martinez and Richie Palacios in a 5-3 setback to Delaware in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

How it Happened
  • The Blue Hens (11-8, 1-0 CAA) got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly from Diaz Nardo, then extended its lead with a RBI double from Erik Bowren in the second.
  • Towson (3-16, 0-1 CAA) got on the board in the fifth inning as Trey Martinez doubled off the base of the wall in left.  With runners on the corners and two outs, Martinez was able to trot home on a failed pickoff attempt at first.
  • UD added to its lead in the home-half of the fifth after Nick Patten delivered a RBI triple to right center and scored on a Calvin Scott single up the middle.
  • The Tigers pulled within one run in the seventh as Charlie Watters and Andrew Cassard each walked with one out.  Martinez loaded the bases with a single through the right side.
  • Billy Lennox drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Palacios followed with a RBI single up the middle.
  • The Blue Hens pushed the advantage back to three with single runs in the seventh and eighth.
  • Towson looked to get a run in the eighth, but a diving catch in center field ended the inning and the threat.
  • Kyle Hinton (3-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits to pick up the victory.
  • Gavin Weyman (0-5) surrendered four runs on seven hits to take the loss.
  • Colman Villa (2) struck out all three hitters he faced for the save.
