Total Team Effort Leads Tigers to 10-2 Victory

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University baseball team put together a total team effort in a 10-2 victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

How it Happened
  • Towson (4-17, 1-2 CAA) jumped out to the early lead as Richie Palacios singled to right and Mark Grunberg singled through the left side.  Colin Gimblet scored Palacios with a single to left and a wild pitch plated the second run of the inning.
  • After UD (12-9, 2-1 CAA) got a run in the second, the Towson offense came back in the third and pushed across two more runs. Billy Lennox singled to start the inning and came around to score on a single to center from Gimblet. Palacios scored later in the inning on a sacrifice bunt from Logan Burke.
  • The turning point in the game came in the fourth inning on a head's up base running play from Dirk Masters. On a grounder to second with one out, Masters avoided the tag from the second baseman long enough to allow the runner to reach safely and extend the inning.
  • A Lennox single and a Palacios walk would load the bases. Grunberg got a RBI with a base on balls and Gimblet delivered the big blow, a bases-clearing triple to left center.
  • That would be more than enough for starter Michael Adams (1-2) who was in control from the start. The senior allowed just five hits and struck out a career-high 10 batters over eight innings.
  • After allowing the run in the second, Adams retired the next 10 hitters he faced. He allowed a run in the sixth inning, but came back to allow just one more base runner the rest of his outing. The lone base runner was a hit batter that he erased three pitches later with a 6-4-3 double play.
  • The Tigers got a pair of insurance runs in the fifth as Richard Miller doubled off the base of the wall in right field to start the inning. Noah Cabrera was hit by a pitch and Masters advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Trey Martinez continued his big weekend by plating both runners with a single to left field.
  • Dean Stramara would close out the game by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
  • Gimblet led the offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBIs.
  • Lennox added two hits and scored a pair of runs, while Palacios and Grunberg combined to score five times.
  • Nick Spadafino (0-4) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over three inning.
