Walks Cost Tigers in Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – In a game that featured 11 combined hits, it was five walks in the third inning that proved to be the different as the Towson University baseball team dropped the series opener, 5-2, to UNCW Friday evening at Brooks Field.

Key Plays
  • In the top of the third inning, Towson got a runner to third base with nobody out, but were not able to push across a run.
  • UNCW came right back in the home-half of the inning and took advantage of five walks to score four runs to take the lead for good.
 
How it Happened
  • Towson got off to a strong start as Craig Alleyne walked and Richie Palacios was hit by a pitch. Colin Gimblet followed with a RBI double down the left-field line.
  • Billy Lennox followed with a groundout to score Palacios and make it a 2-0 game.
  • The Tigers looked to add to its lead in the third as Alleyne was hit by a pitch and took third on a failed pickoff attempt.
  • But, two ground balls had Towson with a runner on first and two outs. The out at the plate proved costly as Lennox lined a ball into right center with two outs.
  • UNCW came right back in the home-half of the frame and loaded the bases with three-straight walks. A fielder's choice plated the first run of the inning Kep Brown scored a run with a base hit.
  • Jackson Meadows then laced the first pitch he saw through the left side to plate two more runs.
  • The Seahawks took advantage of a one-out throwing error in the fourth to plate an unearned run.
  • Matt Watters entered the game in the fifth inning and kept the Seahawks scoreless the remainder of the game.
  • Watters retired the side in order in his first inning, then punched out two more hitters to get out of trouble in the sixth.
  • The final two outs recorded in the sixth started a string of eight straight retired for Watters.
  • Towson threatened to get on the board again in the ninth inning after Grunberg blooped a double just inside the right-field line.
  • Logan Burke followed with a fly ball in shallow right center that dropped harmlessly to the ground. Burke tried to extend the play to a double, but was thrown out.
  • The next two Tigers were retired to end the game.
  • Alex Cuas (0-3) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits and seven walks over four innings.
  • Alex Royalty (4-4) allowed two runs on five hits and six strikeouts over 6.2 innings to pick up the victory.
  • Justin Walke (1) gave up two hits over final 2.1 innings to earn the save.
 
Inside the Boxscore
  • Matt Watters had his best outing as a Tiger as he allowed just one hit and struck out five over four shutout innings.
  • It was career highs for Watters in innings pitched and strikeouts.
  • Mark Grunberg led the offense with three hits, including a double.
  • Richie Palacios was hit by a pitch in the first inning to extend his streak of reaching safely to 15 games.
