50 Year Football Flashback: June 22, 2018

TOWSON, Md. – Leading into the 50th Anniversary season that begins Saturday, Sept. 1 at Morgan State, the Towson University football program will look back at each season with key highlights each Friday from June 22 through August 24.
 
Here's the first installment of season highlights as we look back at the first five seasons of Towson football from 1969-1973. All recaps are courtesy of retired Towson Sports Information Director and Hall of Famer Pete Schlehr.
 
1969 (4-4-1)
  • First football win: Tigers 53, Frostburg State 16.
  • Towson's enrollment 5,600 in its 102nd year.
  • QB Al Dodds throws 18 TD passes, 10 to WR Ron Cadorette.
  • 3 of the 4 losses by a total of 4 points.
 
1970 (6-2-0)
  • DB Chris Ramer, DB Jack Ross each single season record 6 interceptions.
  • 69 points scored vs. Albany single game record for 36 years.
  • Pete Regala's eight extra points single game record for 36 years.
  • 29-0 win over Gallaudet first of 34 shutouts over 50 years.
 
1971 (1-8-0)
  • Gary Gist's 170 punt return yards vs. Federal City a 50-year record.
  • Only player in 50 years with 3 career punt returns for TD – Gary Gist.
  • Carl Runk steps down as head coach.
  • WR Bob Remeto, LB Bob Lobos, LB Carl Perkins named All M-D Conference.
 
1972 (1-9-0)
  • Program's first 100-yard rushing game – RB Mike Wells 126 vs. Hopkins.
  • DB Rick DeMilt's 175 season tackles a 50-year record.
  • A 20-8 win over Hopkins is first of 117 for head coach Phil Albert.
  • Rod Flowers' 79 punts a 50-year single season record.
  • LB Gordy Combs vs. Shepherd first Tiger with 20 plus tackles in a game.
 
1973 (4-4-0)
  • Tigers unbeaten at home for first time (4-0)
  • WR Pat Barrett, RB Larry Jones, LB Jim Sandusky named All M-D Conference.
  • DL Don Redman's 22 tackles vs. Randolph-Macon is a team season high.
  • DL Mike Hilton becomes first defensive lineman to serve as a captain.
 
This fall the Towson University football team will celebrate its 50th Anniversary as it takes on The Citadel Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
 
In honor of the 50th year of football at Towson, fans can purchase season tickets for just $50. Additionally, season tickets in the Gaburick Gold Back Seats are priced at $75.
 
The Tigers will host five home games at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this season, beginning on Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. tilt with The Citadel. On October 6, the Tigers will play their first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game at home against the Seawolves of Stony Brook at 4 p.m.
 
Towson rounds out the three-game home stand on Oct. 13 against the Tribe of William & Mary with a 4 p.m. kickoff. After two weeks on the road the Towson returns to Unitas Stadium on Nov. 3 for a 4 p.m. start time with the Black Bears of Maine.
 
The Tigers round out the 2018 regular season with a Nov. 17 game against James Madison University. Game time for the regular season finale is slated for 2 p.m.
