50 Year Football Flashback: June 29, 2018

TOWSON, Md. – Leading into the 50th Anniversary season that begins Saturday, Sept. 1 at Morgan State, the Towson University football program will look back at each season with key highlights each Friday from June 22 through August 24.
 
Here's the second installment of season highlights as we look back at the first five seasons of Towson football from 1974-1978. All recaps are courtesy of retired Towson Sports Information Director and Hall of Famer Pete Schlehr.
 
1974 (10-0-0)
  • Only undefeated season in first 50 years.
  • RB Larry Jones becomes Tigers' first single season 1,000-yard rusher.
  • Tigers average 34.2 points per game, the most as a Div. III or II program.
  • PK Terry O'Brien kicks program's first 50-yard field goal.
 
1975 (6-4-0)
  • A 27-15 win over Mansfield stretches Towson's longest win streak ever to 11.
  • Tigers average 373.1 ypg of total offense, the most in program's first 17 years.
  • QB Dan Dullea named Towson's first football All-American.
  • OC Bob Skalstad garners teams' most outstanding player award.
 
1976 (10-3-0)
  • Tigers are NCAA Division III national runners up after advancing to Stagg Bowl.
  • A 28-0 comeback falls short as St. John's beats the clock with a game winning FG.
  • DT Eldridge Haley named ABC-TV's MVP of Stagg Bowl in Towson's first ever TV game.
  • Towson beats UMES, Bowie, Salisbury and Frostburg by a combined score of 93-3.
  • Five shutouts most in a single season in first 50 years.
  • TE Skip Chase named consensus first team All-American.
 
1977 (5-4-1)
  • Towson plays Canisius to a 0-0 tie, the only scoreless game in program history.
  • DB Randy Bielski named a first team All-American.
  • LB Richard Wheeler named team's Defensive Player of Year.
  • WR Mike Bennett named Towson's first NFF Maryland College Scholar Athlete.
  • Future NFL coach Joe Vitt is Tigers' Special Teams Award recipient.
 
1978 (7-3-0)
  • Tigers are 5-0 in their new home, the 5,000-seat Towson Stadium.
  • Consensus All-American SE Ken Snoots first to record 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
  • LB Ron Nichols is first Tiger to intercept 3 passes in a single game.
  • DB Randy Bielski makes single game record 24 tackles vs. Ithaca, a 50-year record.
  • DL John Haywood recovers 3 fumbles vs. Mansfield for all-time single game record.
  • Towson closes out its Division III affiliation with a 54-41-2 record.
 
This fall the Towson University football team will celebrate its 50th Anniversary as it takes on The Citadel Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
 
In honor of the 50th year of football at Towson, fans can purchase season tickets for just $50. Additionally, season tickets in the Gaburick Gold Back Seats are priced at $75.
 
The Tigers will host five home games at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this season, beginning on Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. tilt with The Citadel. On October 6, the Tigers will play their first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game at home against the Seawolves of Stony Brook at 4 p.m.
 
Towson rounds out the three-game home stand on Oct. 13 against the Tribe of William & Mary with a 4 p.m. kickoff. After two weeks on the road the Towson returns to Unitas Stadium on Nov. 3 for a 4 p.m. start time with the Black Bears of Maine.
 
The Tigers round out the 2018 regular season with a Nov. 17 game against James Madison University. Game time for the regular season finale is slated for 2 p.m.
