50 Year Football Flashback: 1987-1992

TOWSON, Md. – Leading into the 50th Anniversary season that begins Saturday, Sept. 1 at Morgan State, the Towson University football program will look back at each season with key highlights each Friday from June 22 through August 24.
 
Here's the fourth installment of season highlights as we look back at Towson's first few years as a Division I-AA program from 1987-1992. All recaps are courtesy of retired Towson Sports Information Director and Hall of Famer Pete Schlehr.
 
1987 (4-6-0)
  • Despite 320 passing yards by freshman Chris Goetz, Tigers bow to Northeastern in I-AA debut.
  • Tigers down Maine 17-14 for first win as a I-AA school.
  • WR Dale Chipps becomes all-time leading receiver in yards with 2,768.
  • TB David Meggett is first Tiger with 300 all-purpose yards in a single game.
  • First losing season in 15 years as three Towson opponents make the I-AA playoffs.
 
1988 (5-5-0)
  • Tigers pound James Madison for 34-6 Homecoming win as NG Rodney Smith records four sacks.
  • Meggett sets single game rushing mark with 221 yards in win over New Haven.
  • Meggett is Towson's first Division I-AA All-American.
  • Meggett is Walter Payton Award winner and fifth round draft pick by New York Giants.
 
1989 (2-8-0)
  • Wins come over Delaware State 35-17 and Bucknell 29-23.
  • WR Mike Smith's 13 receptions vs. Liberty are a single game school record.
  • NG Rodney Smith and Mike Smith are AP All-Americans.
 
1990 (2-9-0)
  • A 17-7 victory over Howard and a 21-14 win over Northeastern highlight the season.
  • Chris Goetz ends career as Towson's all-time leading passer with 7,882 yards.
 
1991 (1-10-0)
  • A Dan Crowley to Brian McCarty TD pass lifts Tigers to only win, 13-7 at Howard.
  • Head coach Phil Albert retires with a 117-93-3 record.
  • LB James Dutton and DB Mike Locksley tie for tackle lead with 76.
 
1992 (5-5-0)
  • Gordy Combs takes over becoming first former player to be named Tigers' head coach.
  • Tigers end IUP's 29-home game win streak, scoring 22 points in final 6 minutes for come-from-behind 35-33 win.
  • In ESPN's Wildest Finish in 1992, Dan Crowley's untimed TD pass to WR Mark Orlando beats Northeastern 33-32.
  • Julian Blair ends career as the all-time kick returner with 94 returns for 2,177 yards.
  • RB Tony Vinson and OG Greg Lohr named All-Americans.
 
This fall the Towson University football team will celebrate its 50th Anniversary as it takes on The Citadel Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
 
In honor of the 50th year of football at Towson, fans can purchase season tickets for just $50. Additionally, season tickets in the Gaburick Gold Back Seats are priced at $75.
 
The Tigers will host five home games at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this season, beginning on Sept. 29 with a 4 p.m. tilt with The Citadel. On October 6, the Tigers will play their first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game at home against the Seawolves of Stony Brook at 4 p.m.
 
Towson rounds out the three-game home stand on Oct. 13 against the Tribe of William & Mary with a 4 p.m. kickoff. After two weeks on the road the Towson returns to Unitas Stadium on Nov. 3 for a 4 p.m. start time with the Black Bears of Maine.
 
The Tigers round out the 2018 regular season with a Nov. 17 game against James Madison University. Game time for the regular season finale is slated for 2 p.m.
