TOWSON, Md. – Friday night saw a career performance from junior
Nukiya Mayo who scored a new career high with 30 points, leading the Towson University women's basketball team to an 88-83 win over Northeastern.
Joining Mayo in the double-figure club are
Q. Murray with 21 points and
Kionna Jeter with 20, while
Maia Lee grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Tigers improve to 9-5 overall with a 3-0 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and are currently tied for first place with James Madison. This is the first time since the 2007-08 season that Towson has started conference play 3-0 and the first time since the 2009-10 season to have three straight conference wins.
How it Happened
- The opening quarter was handily won by the Tigers with a 22-13 score at the end of the first 10 minutes. Ryan Holder was leading the team with seven points while Mayo had support with six.
- In the second period the battle ensued as Northeastern tied it up twice, forcing more effort from the home team. Towson went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to eight before heading into the locker room leading by nine at the half.
- The Tigers were dominating offensively with a 62.1 field goal percentage at halftime.
- One minute into the third period the home team had a 13-point advantage, which would fall to just five in the next four minutes.
- Three trips to the free throw line for the Huskies and two good jump shots would give momentum to Northeastern as the road team came within five of tying it up three times in the third.
- Towson held on to capitalize off a defensive rebound and later a steal in the last two minutes to extend the lead to nine.
- The Huskies won the fourth period 31-27, dropping 14 points in the paint as they tried to catch back up.
- With 52 seconds on the clock the road team was down five, but that's as close as they would get with the Tigers extending the lead to as much as nine in the final 50 seconds.
- Friday's shooting percentage was the highest of the season, 49.2 percent, the highest since last season's game against Saint Joseph's where the Tigers posted a 50.8 mark.
Beyond the Box
- Towson's 88 points were the most scored since the Nov. 17 game against La Salle.
- Along with a career high in points, Nukiya Mayo also set a new career high in blocks and steals with five in each category.
- The 16 Tiger steals are a season high, besting the previous mark of 12 set at George Washington earlier this season.
- Friday's win is the first over Northeastern since Jan. 3, 2016, breaking a five-game losing streak to the Huskies.
- Towson is now 5-1 when three players score in double figures.
