This week, the Towson University men's basketball team will take its annual trip to Drexel and Delaware to take on the Dragons and Blue Hens, respectively. Besides Loyola, Drexel and Delaware are the two opponents the Tigers have played more than any other.
The schools were members of the East Coast Conference, America East and now the CAA together. There have been many memorable moments through the years.
One real oddity occurred in 1996. It was the Tigers' first year in the North Atlantic Conference, which was the name before they changed it to America East. Towson and Delaware played three times in just a 10 day span. For some strange reason, the Tigers and Blue Hens played the final two regular season games against each other. The Tigers lost both games. As luck would have it, those two losses set up the Tigers to play you guessed it, Delaware in the first round of the conference tournament.
The tournament that year was played at the newly opened Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of Delaware. After having lost the two regular season games a week earlier, the Tigers prevailed in the conference tourney. So, who do they get in the second round? You got it, Drexel. Drexel led by Malik Rose, who would spend 13 years in the NBA winning two titles with the San Antonio Spurs.
Rose and Mike DeRocckis beat the Tigers 84-74. It was the end of the most successful run of Towson basketball at the Division I era. From 1988 through 1996, the Tigers had just one season with a losing record, won three conference tournaments, three regular season conference crowns, and went to the only two NCAA Division I tournaments in school history.
Towson would not have another winning season in men's hoops until
Pat Skerry's second season 15 years later. There were some really bad years during that span. Most of them included many losses to the Dragons and Blue Hens.
Let's hope this week, the Tigers can slay some dragons and roast some chickens.
We all know what an unbelievable job Coach Skerry has done in turning around the men's basketball program. Well don't look now, but women's basketball coach
Diane Richardson is doing the same. Coach Rich has her team at the top of the CAA standings with a 4-0 conference record.
The women's team hasn't had a winning record since Joe Mathews' squad went 16-14 back in the 2011-12 season. Let's all support Coach Richardson and her players as they try to win a CAA championship. The 10-5 Tigers are back at SECU on Jan. 25Â to take on Elon.
I'll have the call for you this week when the men play Drexel on Thursday night and Delaware on Saturday night. The both broadcasts begin at 6:45 p.m. on CBS Sportsradio 1300 and TowsonTigers.com.
Until next week, GO TIGERS!!!
