Tigers Take Possession of First Place in CAA

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The winning streak continued Friday night for the Towson University women's basketball team as the Tigers defeated the College of Charleston on the road 77-61.

This is the first time in program history that Towson is first in the conference, the first time since 2007-08 to have a 5-0 start in conference play, and the first time since 2011-12 to win six straight games.

The Tigers were led by redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter who scored 26 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and a team-high five steals. Junior Nukiya Mayo posted 19 with nine rebounds, senior Maia Lee also had nine rebounds.

How it Happened
  • Towson opened the game taking a 17-3 lead by the end of the first five minutes. The Tigers held the College of Charleston to just one jumper and one made free throw until the 3:45 mark.
  • The Cougars fought back to score five points in the final three minutes of the first quarter to cut the lead to 10.
  • With 8:20 to go in the second the home team had cut the deficit to six, forcing Towson to extend more. Jeter responded with a three followed by a trey from Mayo to increase the lead to 12.
  • The Tigers reached a peak of leading by 16 points with 6:22 to go, and entered the locker room with the same lead 39-23.
  • Charleston outscored Towson 26-11 in the third, cutting the lead to nine with four minutes to go in the period, then taking the lead for the first time with one minute left.
  • After forcing the Tigers to respond, the Cougars rallied and tied it before taking the lead again and holding a two-point advantage for 60 seconds.
  • With 6:40 left on the clock, Jeter began a 9-0 personal scoring run. The Spartanburg, South Carolina native made four layups and two free throws for six-straight made shots.
  • Towson led by eight following Jeter's steal-and-score rally, giving momentum for the road team. Jeter, Lee, Mayo and Q. Murray all made buckets in the last three minutes to seal the win.
From the Coach
"We are just trying to play our best," said head coach Diane Richardson. "I'm happy for our players, but I know that we still have a long road ahead of us."

Beyond the Box

  • Friday was the third-straight game with Towson shooting over 40 percent from the field and with double-figure steals. The Tigers have had nine games with 10 or more steals this season.
