Mayo Scores 21 as Towson Falls to William & Mary

TOWSON, Md. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team fell to William & Mary at home 80-69.
 
The Tigers were led by Nukiya Mayo with 21 points while Q. Murray contributed 18 and Maia Lee had 10. Mayo also led the team in rebounds with nine. Towson moves to 12-7 on the season, 6-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
 
How it Happened
  • The Tribe scored the first bucket of the day opening a first period with back-and-forth baskets. Towson came out to win quarter by two points, 18-16, led by Nukiya Mayo with nine points.
  • The second quarter proved more of a battle as William & Mary took a six-point lead into the locker room.
  • Towson saw five points from Jalynn Holmes and six from Maia Lee to keep the home team in the game, but entering the third period the Tigers trailed by three for the first two minutes.
  • A layup by Lee followed by a steal and layup from Mayo took the lead for Towson 39-38 with seven minutes left in the third.
  • War wasn't far away as the Tigers' biggest lead of the quarter was four points??? At the 4:47 mark, Q. Murray took a charge leading to the under-five media timeout, while Towson was leading 45-43.
  • On the other side of the timeout, Mayo went to the line and made two free throws, putting the Tigers up 47-43 with 4:17 to go in the period. Just one minute later the Tribe cut the lead to one.
  • At the end of the third the Tribe had a seven point lead, with 5:13 left in the fourth the road team had the same advantage.
  • With 3:24 left to play, Murray grabbed a tipped pass and drove in for layup to cut the lead to three, as the Tigers trailed 64-61.
  • Following two trips to the line for the road team and a layup, William & Mary took a six point lead, up 69-62, before Murray made a jumper and cut it to four.
  • A lane violation gave the Tribe an extra free throw attempt and an eight-point lead with 1:42 on the clock. Murray once again came in clutch to cut the lead to eight following a 10-point gain from the road team, but a foul would put Eva Hodgson on the line and extend William & Mary's lead to 10 again.
Beyond the Box
  • Sunday was Towson's first loss at home this season.
  • The Tigers are in second place in the conference behind James Madison.
  • Sunday was Towson's ninth game this season with three players in double figures.
