Tigers Fall on the Road in Overtime at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A chance at knocking off the conference leader for the second time this season came Sunday for the Towson University women's basketball team at James Madison, but would end in an overtime loss 71-59.
 
Towson had two players with 11 points, a team-best, in Q. Murray and Kionna Jeter, while Nukiya Mayo dropped 10. Freshman Janeen Camp led the team in rebounds with 12 and Mayo had a team-high five blocks.
 
How it Happened
  • For the first two minutes and 20 seconds neither team found the basket, before Kionna Jeter broke the silence and the battle ensued.
  • Towson reached a five-point lead with just under five minutes to go in the first, a jumper from JMU's Logan Reynolds would cut the advantage but Janeen Camp respond with a made free throw followed by a layup to get a six-point lead.
  • At the end of one the Tigers led by nine. James Madison would cut the lead to two with the first two buckets of the second quarter.
  • The Dukes took their first lead of the game with 3:24 to go in the second quarter and took a two-point lead into the half.
  • Entering the second half, JMU's Lexie Barrier made two free throws to extend the home team's lead to four.
  • In the following minutes both teams traded baskets and reached a stalemate with 6:41 to go in the quarter. The Dukes tied the score once more but Towson rolled to a nine-point lead to end the third with three made free throws from Murray and a layup from Ryan Holder and Mayo each.
  • Towson called a timeout with a 48-47 lead with seven minutes left to play after James Madison took an 8-0 run to cut the lead to one.
  • On the other side of the timeout Holder drove to the rim for a layup, followed by a three-point bucket from Jeter to extend the lead to six. At the final media timeout the Tigers led 53-47.
  • Towson reached a six-point lead again with 3:32 to go but the Dukes tied it up with two made layups and two good free throws.
  • In the final seconds Kamiah Smalls missed a three with a rebound from the Tigers as time ran out, forcing overtime with a 55-55 final score in regulation.
  • Towson scored the first bucket of overtime but the home team went on a 9-0 run to take a seven point lead with just two minutes to go forcing a timeout from the road team.
  • On the other side of the timeout Jeter made two free throws cutting the lead to 59-64, the final points scored by the road team.
Beyond the Box
  • Sunday was the 10th game this season with three players in double figures.
  • Freshman Janeen Camp had a career-high in rebounds with 12 and minutes with 23.
  • Q. Murray and Nukiya Mayo each set career-bests in minutes with 45 and 44 respectively.
  • Sunday was the first overtime game for the Tigers since Jan. 17, 2016 at Delaware.
  • This was Kionna Jeter's 19th game this season in double figures.
Looking Ahead
Towson remains on the road, traveling to Hofstra and Northeastern next weekend.
