Volleyball Overcomes Slow Start to Top Elon on the Road

ELON, N.C. -- Overcoming a slower-than-desired start, the Towson University women's volleyball team won its 10th-straight match for a 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-19) decision at Elon Sunday afternoon.

Towson (16-2, 6-0 CAA) hit for .333 in the match, including .481 in the second set and .455 in the third. Strong blocking returned for the Tigers as Towson finished with 11 team blocks, backed by seven from Olivia Finckel and six from rookie Lydia Wiers. Towson's offense was led by a double-double from Marrisa Wonders, who posted 49 assists and come up with 13 digs. Annie Ertz and Emily Jarome knocked down 16 kills apiece to lead the match.

Elon (9-11, 4-3 CAA) was led in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match by 12 kills from Leah Daniel. Isabella Seman came away with 11 digs for the Phoenix.

How It Happened
  • The first set was back and forth throughout its duration, featuring 11 ties and five lead changes. The Phoenix took a 12-10 lead but Towson responded with a 4-0 burst later in the set for a 16-14 lead, aided by an ace from Ertz.
  • Down the stretch, the set was tied five more times in the 20s before Elon stuck three-straight points for a 25-23 set decision.
  • Set two went the way of the Tigers as Towson hit for .481 in the set and logged five blocks. Hold a 9-5 lead, Towson extended its advantage out to 10 behind a 6-0 run. Elon fought back with four unanswered points to make it 15-9. 
  • Those would be the final consecutive points Elon scored until the end of the frame. Towson closed the door with a 6-3 run to tie match at two sets apiece with a 25-14 decision.
  • In the third set, Towson continued to flex its momentum and raced out to a 5-0 lead with three different point getters, including another ace from Ertz and two kills from Jarome.
  • Despite the break, Towson continued to dominate set three and took a 10-2 lead with another four point scorers. Wonders dropped in an ace on the 4-0 run before Elon burned its second timeout of the set.
  • While hitting .455 for third set, Towson continued its lead out to 18-4, bolstered by a 4-0 burst. Elon attempted a comeback in the third set but could not string together points before Towson won 25-11.
  • In the first third of the fourth set, Towson took advantage of three Elon errors to build a 4-0 run into an 11-8 lead before the Phoenix called timeout. Out of the break, Towson continued to roll thanks to three-straight kills from Jarome to gain a 14-9 lead and another Elon timeout.
  • After the Tigers' timeout, Towson put together its out run at 6-2 for a 24-18 lead. Camryn Allen extended her service ace streak to 14 matches during the run as well. Silvia Grassini and Wonders combined for the final point as Towson took a definitive 25-19 decision to win the match.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson improved its hitting percentage with a .333 for the match, aided by a percentage nearing .500 in the second and third sets.
  • Three Tigers finished in double-digit kills, led by Jarome and Ertz's 16 while Wiers posted 10. Wiers and Grassini hit at a .474 and .429 while Wonders snuck in five kills. She led the match with 49 assists while added a double-double to her day with 13 digs.
  • Allen successfully extended her ace-scoring streak to 14 matches, the longest active run in the CAA. She finished with 17 digs as well.
  • Towson improved to 12-1 all-time against Elon, winning 12 straight matches over the Phoenix. The first set was the first frame Towson has dropped since besting James Madison in four sets on Sept. 29.
  • Towson has won 10 straight matches, the program's longest winning streak since opening the 2017 season with a 16-0 mark. The Tigers continued their best league start since the 2012 team went 12-0 in league play.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers return home for a pair next weekend, hosting UNCW on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on the College of Charleston on Sunday at 1 p.m.
  • Both matches will be held at SECU Arena.
