Versatility Leads Volleyball Once Again Over UNCW

TOWSON, Md. -- It was another night full of versatility for the Towson University women's volleyball program as the Tigers bested Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe UNCW in four sets (25-15, 25-11, 20-25, 25-16) at SECU Arena.

Towson (17-2, 7-0 CAA) extended its winning streak to 11 thanks to five different players hitting double-digit kills. Rookie of the Year candidate Lydia Wiers drilled down a match-best 14 kills while Emily Jarome finished with a dozen. Silvia Grassini and Annie Ertz posted 11 while Olivia Finckel had 10. Senior setter Marrisa Wonders logged another double-double with 51 assists and a dozen digs while Camryn Allen notched 14 digs.

UNCW (11-9, 1-6 CAA) was led by a dozen kills from Madison Peters. A trio of Seahawks finished with six kills. Libero Anna Weissmann had a busy evening with 17 digs.

How it Happened
  • It seemed to be a tight match early as the two sides tied the match five times in the first 10 serves, but tied 5-5, Towson ripped off five unanswered points to double the Seahawks and force a UNCW timeout. Wiers had two kills in the run, all with Wonders on to serve.
  • UNCW scored three points in the next five rallies, but Towson continued to pound the ball 7-1 run, including two blocks, that led to a 17-9 advantage.
  • The Seahawks could not string together points for the remainder of the first set as Towson took a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 decision.
  • Set two opened conversely from the first as Towson exploded for a 6-1 lead early, capitalizing on five UNCW errors that included two Towson blocks. The Seahawks rallied back to pull within two of Towson's 9-7 lead, but again the Tigers prevented UNCW from scoring back-to-back points until a 21-8 Towson lead.
  • UNCW scored three-straight to trim Towson's lead to 21-11 but kills from Jarome and Finckel coupled with another block helped Towson finish the second set 25-11.
  • Set three was tight throughout and featured 15 ties and three lead changes. Neither side gained more than a one-point lead before UNCW took an 8-6 advantage. Later the Tigers put together a 4-1 run to take a 13-11 lead but it was short lived as UNCW pulled even at 13-13.
  • Again the Tigers took a two-point lead before the Seahawks rallied for three in a row for a 17-16 lead. After trading points once again, UNCW logged six points in the final seven rallies to win the third 25-20. Towson held a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • After playing out of rhythm for the third set, Towson got back its momentum and jumped out to an 8-5 lead on back-to-back kills from middle blockers Grassini and Wiers. From that point, Towson did not allow the Seahawks consecutive points for the remainder of the match.
  • Towson capitalized on small UNCW mistakes and strung together several runs, eventually building a 23-14 before the Seahawks called timeout. Towson scored two of the final three points to seal its 11th-straight win with a 25-16 set decision.
