Volleyball Completes Sweep of CAA First Leg

TOWSON, Md. -- Behind a 3-0 sweep, the Towson University women's volleyball team completed the first leg of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action with a clean 8-0 record. The Tigers knocked off the College of Charleston in straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-16) Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.

Towson (18-2, 8-0 CAA) has won its last 12 matches while besting Charleston for the first time since 2015. It was another balanced effort for the Tigers as Silvia Grassini and Olivia Finckel led the day with 10 kills apiece. League Rookie of the Year candidate Lydia Wiers knocked in nine kills while Annie Ertz and Emily Jarome had eight and seven, respectively. Blocking was a key point again for Towson as the Tigers finished with 15 total blocks, including eight assisted stops from Grassini.

For a 16th-straight match, Towson's libero, Camryn Allen, successfully served an ace, putting up three in the match. Towson finished with a perfect receiving percentage after not allowing Charleston any service aces.

Charleston (4-15, 1-6 CAA) was led by six kills from Claire Campbell while Caroline Bower, Mandy Napierala and Molly Russell have five apiece. The Cougars were limited to a .117 hitting percentage while Logan Manusky had a match-high 15 digs.

How it Happened
  • After trading points early in the first set, Towson's high-octane offense settled in and posted a 7-1 run for a 10-4 advantage. Three different Tigers, Jarome, Finckel and Grassini, logged kills in the run.
  • Charleston struggled to score more than two straight points as Towson built out to a 23-16 lead. The Cougars made a small run late but the Tigers finished off set one with a 3-2 burst for a 25-18 decision. Jarome and Wiers logged the final two kills for Towson.
  • The trading point portion of set two last a little longer as the teams tied five times before Towson opened a 4-0 run out to a 12-9 lead, thanks to three blocks in that stretch. The Tigers kept their lead between three and four points before Charleston made it interesting late with a 3-0 run to cut Towson's lead to 21-19.
  • A 4-2 finishing run for Towson, with two kills from Finckel and another one each from Ertz and Grassini, completed the second set 25-21 in favor of the Black & Gold.
  • Opening the third set, Wiers and Ertz got up on the block followed by back-to-back service aces from Allen for a 3-0 Towson advantage. Neither team could score consecutive points until the Tigers scored points nine and 10 for a 10-6 lead. Another 5-1 Towson run extended the Tigers lead out to 15-8 with two more blocks, and an ace and a kill from Ertz. A comeback was not in the cards for the Cougars as Towson finished the match with a 6-2 flourish and a 25-16 decision in the third.
Behind the Numbers
  • Setter Marrisa Wonders notched her 10th double-double of the year with another 37 assists and 10 digs. It was the fourth-straight match Wonders posted a double-double.
  • Both seniors, Finckel and Grassini led the Tigers with 10 kills. The pair hit .241 and .389, respectively. Towson hit for .250 in the match, led by Grassini.
  • Wiers had nine kills on a .33 hitting percentage while adding five blocks, including one of three solo stops for Towson. Finckel and Ertz notched solo stuffs as well.
  • Allen has now served at least one service ace in the Tigers' last 16 matches, the longest run for any player in the CAA. She leads Towson in that category with 22 on the year. The junior libero had 10 digs as well. Jarome led Towson with 11.
  • Towson has won 12 straight matches, the longest winning streak for the program since opening the 2017 season with a 16-0 mark. Towson is 8-0 through the first half of league play and has dropped just two sets in CAA matches this season. It is the Tigers' best start to league play since going 12-0 during the 2012 season.
  • With the sweep, Towson halted a six-match skid against the Cougars, dating back to a 3-0 win during the 2015 season. Towson won both matches in 2015, the only wins over Charleston prior to Sunday's victory.
