Volleyball Battles Past Northeastern to Open Weekend

BOSTON - After a tight first set and overcoming a run in the second set, the Towson University women's volleyball team continued its run through the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a sweep of Northeastern, topping the Huskies 28-26, 25-19, 25-15 at the Cabot Center.

Towson (19-2, 9-0 CAA) extended its winning streak to 13 with a third-straight sweep of the Huskies dating back to last season's CAA Tournament. A versatile attack led the Tigers as Rookie of the Year candidate Lydia Wiers knocked down 13 kills while Annie Ertz had 11. Wiers and fellow middle Silvia Grassini had four blocks apiece. Marrisa Wonders pushed up 36 assists, logging the 3,000 assist of her career in the process.

Northeastern (10-11, 4-5 CAA) was paced by Athena Ardilla with 12 kills. The Huskies finished with four blocks, all of which came in the first two sets. Natalie Shollin led the hosts with three.

How it Happened
  • The first set was tight throughout as there were seven ties and three lead changes.
  • Towson held a 22-16 lead late in the first set before a 7-1 Northeastern run deadlocked the frame at 23-23. Towson went up 24-23 before back-to-back Husky points made it 25-24. The Tigers responded in kind with back-to-back points on two Northeastern errors before the hosts tied the set 26-26.
  • Towson finished off the first set with back-to-back kills from Olivia Finckel and Emily Jarome for a 28-26 decision.
  • Set two was all Towson early as the Tigers went out on a 3-0 lead before taking a 5-2 edge. Towson continued to pour on the offense as Ertz dropped in one of her three service aces for a 7-3 lead.
  • Later in the set however, Northeastern clawed back after calling timeout, trailing 17-9. The Huskies went on another 7-1 run to pull back within two of the Tigers' 18-16 lead. Still holding a two-point, 20-18 lead, Towson finished with a bang on a 6-1 run that included three kills from Wiers for a 25-19 second set score.
  • After several ties to open the third set, the Tigers cracked open a 13-8 lead with a quick 4-0 burst. After a Northeastern kill from Ardilla, Towson made another run, this time a 5-0 flourish for an 18-9 led. Northeastern could not pull much closer as the Tigers capped the match with a 3-1 run that had kills from three different sources, Jarome, Wiers and Wonders.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson was again led by a pair in double figures with Wiers' 13 kills and Ertz's 11. Wiers and Wonders both hit for .571 in the match, with the former swinging 21 times with just one error. Wonders posted 36 assists in the three-set match, increasing her season average.
  • Ertz finished with a .375 hitting percentage with 24 attempts and two errors.
  • Blocktober Fest continued for Towson as the Tigers finished with eight total blocks, including four from the hands of Wiers and Grassini.
