Continued Balance, Blocking Sees Volleyball Sweep at Home

TOWSON, Md. -- Another balanced night from the Towson University women's volleyball team, the Tigers remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action with a clean 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-12, 25-13) over visiting Northeastern Friday night.

Towson (13-2, 3-0 CAA) hit at a .422 percentage for the match, including .500 in the first set. The Tigers combined for 13 total kills in just three sets. Annie Ertz led Towson with 11 kills while Emily Jarome joined her in double-digits with 10. Camryn Allen extended her ace streak to 11 matches with a pair.

Northeastern (7-8, 1-2 CAA) struggled at the net, hitting at just .134. The Huskies swung at a .364 rate in the first set, but hit .000 in the second and .033 in the third. Athena Ardila led Northeastern with nine kills.

How it Happened
  • The first set was back-and-forth early as Towson raced out to a 6-3 lead before Northeastern rallied to tie the set 7-7. Deadlocking the match ignited a spark for Towson as the Tigers reeled off five straight points from three different sources, Jarome, Ertz and Olivia Finckel.
  • Later in the set, the Huskies rallied again and pulled back within on, 21-20 Towson. The Tigers capped the first set with a 4-1 burst on two Finckel kills and one each from Jarome and Ertz.
  • Set two was all Towson early as the Tigers roared out to a 9-2 lead that included both of Allen's service aces.
  • The Tigers kept their collective feet on the gas and extended the advantage out to 15-7 with another variety of attackers, including Silvia Grassini and setter Marrisa Wonders.
  • Towson kept the Huskies at bay and held Northeastern without back-to-back points for the remainder of the second set. Towson logged four straight points to finish the frame 25-12, with Marija Tomasevic serving the final three points.
  • Set three opened similarly as the Tigers jumped out to a 7-3 advantage, a run that included three kills from Finckel. Later in the set, the Tigers doubled the Huskies for a 14-7 lead followed by an 8-2 run for a 23-12 lead. In Towson style, the Tigers finished the match with a double block from Finckel and freshman Lydia Wiers.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson was clicking on all cylinders, including a .500 hitting percentage in the first set. The Tigers finished with 13 total blocks, including six assisted stops from both middle blockers, Wiers and Grassini. Finckel added five stops as well.
  • Ertz led the Tigers with 11 kills, hitting at a .360 percentage on 25 swings with just two errors. Wiers led Towson's starters with a .667 hitting percentage with six kills on nine attempts with zero errors.
  • Wonders led the Black & Gold with nine digs, followed by eight each from Allen and rookie defensive specialist Asia Goins. Allen successfully extended her service ace streak to 11 matches.
  • Wonders led Towson with 32 assists, her fourth-straight match with at least 30 assists. She was denied a double-double, however. It was the first time since Sept. 20 she missed a double-double.
  • The Tigers improved to 3-0 in CAA play for the first time since the 2012 campaign./
  • Towson has won its last seven matches, the Tigers' longest run of wins since late in the 2017 season.
  • After dropping both 2018 regular season matches in five sets against Northeastern, Towson has won its last two matches by 3-0 counts, including the quarterfinals of last season's CAA Tournament.
  • The was Towson's first win at SECU Arena against the Huksies since a 3-1 decision on Oct. 11, 2015.
