Red-Hot Start Continues for Volleyball With Another Sweep

TOWSON, Md. -- Riding the program's best start since the 2012 campaign, the Towson University women's volleyball team swept defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Hofstra University 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21) Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.

The Tigers (14-2, 4-0 CAA) have dropped just one set through four league matches, adding a third conference sweep to their resume. With another versatile afternoon, the Tigers were paced by 10 kills from Annie Ertz. The Tigers scored six service aces and finished without a receiving error. Marrisa Wonders posted 28 assists while Asia Goins logged a dozen digs.

Towson hosted its annual Autism Awareness Day at SECU Arena. For the duration of the match, the Tigers sported their blue Aces for Autism jerseys.

Hofstra (8-7, 1-2 CAA) was backed by 12 kills from Laura Masciullo. She was the match leader in kills and was the only member of the Pride to hit double-digits. Luisa Sydlik posted 20 assists along with a team-best nine digs. The Pride were limited to a .143 hitting percentage.

How it Happened
  • The opening of the match was back-and-forth as the first set saw five ties and one lead change. With the set tied 5-5, Towson put in separation and used a 5-1 burst to go up 10-6. Emily Jarome logged two kills and an ace while Lydia Wiers and Olivia Finckel added kills.
  • Hofstra could not find its rhythm in the opening frame as the Tigers went on a 7-2 run for an 18-10 lead. Towson capped the first set 25-15 thanks to a 3-0 flourish with two Tigers scoring points on an Ertz kill and an Allen ace.
  • Towson continued its momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead early. Hofstra strung together four straight points and tied the set at 6-6, followed by a 3-0 Towson run that was countered by another 3-0 Hofstra run for a 9-9 tie. After an Ertz kill, Towson got four of its next five points on Pride errors.
  • The Tigers ran out to a 10-point advantage with Goins on to serve. Towson posted back-to-back blocks in the run while three different players scored kills. Jarome finished off the set with a big swing for a second-straight 25-15 decision.
  • Set three was the tightest part of the afternoon as the teams tied six times with two lead changes. Towson roared out to a 4-0 lead to start the set, but a Hofstra timeout halted the momentum and sent the Pride on a 4-2 run. Hofstra took its first lead of the third at 9-8 and continued the run out to six for an 11-8 advantage. The Tigers battled back on a 3-0 burst with a Marija Tomasevic kill and back-to-back Pride errors.
  • After tying the set at 11, 12, 14 and 15, Towson held the Pride to consecutive points just once while taking an insurmountable lead and capped the third with a 4-1 run and a 25-21 decision.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson, which leads the CAA in team hitting percentage, logged a .224 for the afternoon. The Tigers, who also lead the league in opponent hitting percentage, limited Hofstra to a .143 percentage for the day.
  • Both teams had eight team blocks as the Tigers were paced by four each from Wiers, Ertz and Silvia Grassini. The latter of the bunch hit for .500 in the match, knocking down eight kills with just one attack error on the day with 14 swings.
  • Five different Tigers scored service aces as Jarome led the match with a pair. Allen successfully scored a service ace in her 12th straight match. Goins led the day with 12 digs while Allen was second for Towson with nine. Hofstra did not have a player in double figure digs and was led by Sydlik.
  • Towson extended its overall winning streak to eight, a run that includes seven sweeps. The Tigers remain unbeaten in three-set matches, improving to 12-0 this year in three-setters. The Tigers have played just four matches that went beyond the third set.
  • Towson swept the Pride for the first time since the 2017 campaign.
  • While avenging a 2018 CAA Championship semifinal loss, the Tigers got off to a 4-0 start in CAA matches for the first time since the 2012 season.
