TOWSON, Md. - Sunday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team took its second win of the season over American a 63-60 victory.
The Tigers were led once again by
Myasia Jones with 17 points and
Kionna Jeter witih 16 points.
Q. Murray also finished in double figures with 14 points while
Nukiya Mayo led the team in rebounds with nine.
How it Happened
- Towson scored the first points of the game and the road team started scoring very quickly, jumping out to an 11-4 lead with 6:17 to go in the first.
- The home team battled but American continued to extend its lead with a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- A heavy defensive showing from the Tigers played out in the second quarter, holding the Eagles to just nine points.Â
- Myasia Jones led the way with eight points in the second quarter, putting Towson within four points of tying it up at the halftime buzzer.
- The third quarter brought a stellar performance from Kionna Jeter, she scored all of her 16 points in 9 minutes 44 seconds, all in the third.
- Jeter made four three-point buckets and scored the first seven straight points of the second half. With 6:47 left in the third she drained a three that put Towson back in the lead for the first time since the first quarter.
- Nukiya Mayo's five points and five rebounds in the third were also crucial as the Tigers outscored the Eagles 25-10.
- Entering the fourth the home team led by eight but a field goal shooting percentage of 57.1 from American pushed the fourth quarter into a back-and-forth scoring affair.
- With just over six minutes to go, Q. Murray hit a jumper holding Towson at a nine-point advantage.
- American would claw back within four with 5:19 on the clock.
- Turnovers led to more scoring from the road team as a layup from Taylor Brown put the score at 59-58 with 1:11 remaining.
- Jones came out with a big three to follow Brown's layup but the Eagles did not go quietly. With six seconds to go American's leading scorer Jade Edwards made a layup and put the game within two points.
- Following a timeout Myka Johnson-Matthews was fouled and made one of her free throws, time expired as Towson held on to win.
Beyond the Box
- This is Myasia Jones' third straight game in double figures.
- Nukiya Mayo is now 18 points from scoring 1,000 in her career.Â
- This was Towson's best three-point field goal shooting percentage this season with a 36.8 percentage, 7-of-19 made.
- Sunday's game was also the third time this season the Tigers have held an opponent to 10 points or less in one quarter, today the Black and Gold held American to nine in the second quarter and 10 in the third.
- Towson is now 2-1 at home.
