SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Friday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team faced Iona in its second game of the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament, taking a 75-58 win.
The Tigers were led by
Kionna Jeter who posted a season-high 31 points.
Myasia Jones also dropped 14 with 11 from
Nukiya Mayo and 10 from
Q. Murray. Jeter led the team in rebounds with nine and had a season best six steals.
How it Happened
- Both teams scored back and forth in the opening few minutes of the game but two straight buckets from the Tigers pushed Towson to an 11-4 lead before the first media timeout.
- On the other side of the break the Gaels caught up, trailing by three with just over a minute left in the period.
- At the end of the first the Tigers led by five but the second quarter would be a different story. Iona fought hard on both ends of the court, coming within two points of tying it up just before halftime and taking a one-point lead. A late foul would put the Gaels on the line as they took a 34-31 lead into the locker room.
- Kionna Jeter had a team-high nine points at halftime, her and Ryan Holder led the team in rebounds with four each.
- Towson was shooting well through the first half, 44.8 percent from the field after a 50 percent showing in the first quarter.
- Entering the third quarter the Black & Gold went on an 8-0 run to take a 39-34 lead at the media timeout, Jeter leading the team with 13.
- The Tigers led by nine at the end of the third, 50-41.
- Strong shooting would help Towson once again in the fourth with a field goal percentage of 75 percent as the Tigers outscored Iona 25-17.
- By the media timeout of the fourth quarter the Gaels were trailing by just nine points. Myasia Jones hit a three on the other side if the break to give Towson a 62-49 advantage.
- Jeter lit up the floor with four steals in the fourth, scoring on three of those possessions as the Tigers went on a short run.
- Iona took a timeout when the Tigers held a 66-52 lead, the next timeout for the Gaels came with 43 seconds to go and a 71-55 lead for the Black & Gold.
- A couple more fouls later and the Tigers sealed the win.
Beyond the Box
- Kionna Jeter's 31 points are the first time she has scored at least 30 this year. It is her first 30-point performance since scoring 30 against Delaware in the quarterfinal of the 2019 CAA Championship.
- This is also Jeter's ninth straight game in double figures, dating back to the March 16 game against Drexel.
- Nukiya Mayo scored in double figures for the fifth time this season.
- Myasia Jones has come out of the gates with five straight games with 10 or more points. Against Iona she made 6-of-7 from the field, an 85 percent field goal shooting night.
- Towson has now won four of its last six games played at a neutral site, dating back to March 14 against Delaware in the conference tournament.
