SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Saturday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team played in the first program meeting against San Diego State University. The Aztecs took the win in their home opener 80-72.
Towson was led by senior
Nukiya Mayo who recorded her second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt-junior
Kionna Jeter dropped 15 points.
How it Happened
- The first quarter saw a quick 4-0 lead for the home team and the Tigers fought back to take the lead.
- Towson ended the first 10 minutes ahead, leading 19-17.
- Nukiya Mayo paced the Tigers in the first half with 10 points as the road team held a 39-31 lead to enter the locker room. In the second quarter the Black and Gold outscored the Aztecs 20-14.
- Entering the third period Ryan Holder made a three to extend the lead to 11 before the home team went on a 13-3 run cutting the lead to one with 6:19 to go in the quarter.
- Kionna Jeter extended the lead to three in the next play but the Tigers continued in a back-and-forth battle in the remainder of the period.
- By the end of the third Towson led by just one, a 60-59 advantage.
- Entering the fourth quarter the Aztecs took the lead back for just the third time in the game but held on as the Tigers did not tie it back up and the home team dropped 21 points including six from free throws.
Beyond the Box
- Nukiya Mayo has now recorded 35 games with at least 10 points and it is her 13th career double-double.
- This is Mayo's ninth career game with 20 points or more.
- Kionna Jeter recorded her 47th career game with double figure scoring and second of the season.
