From the Broadcast Booth: What a Past 10 Days

It has been quite a trip for the Towson men's basketball team over the last 10 days. The Tigers played three games, going 2-1. Through the first ten games of the season, Towson sits at 5-5. They should have played eleven games by now. That's where our story begins.

On the morning of Nov. 30, the team gathered at the Towson Center for a trip to Ithaca, New York for a Dec. 1 showdown with the Big Red of Cornell. It was a game the Tigers were looking forward to, as they had revenge on their mind from last year's 86-74 loss.

That was Thanksgiving weekend and you knew traffic was going to be heavy. The bus ride up took about six hours, but the Tigers had time to go over to the gym and practice, head back to the hotel for dinner and relax for the 4 p.m. game the next day.

There was an impending snowstorm on the way and the team had made contingency plans to stay Sunday night after the game if the roads were deemed to be dangerous.

After the team breakfast, I went back to the room and decided to take a shower. I room on the road with basketball SID Rob Knox, and I had just gotten into the shower around 11 a.m. when Rob started pounding on the door, saying "The game's cancelled! We are leaving in 15 minutes."

Now when I had gone down to breakfast, it was a combo of rain and sleet happening outside. No snow.

Turns out the hearty folks in upstate New York aren't so hearty. Because of the impending snow, the Cornell folks couldn't get staff to come in and work the game.

The Tigers returned home and on Wednesday, Dec. 4 went to Morgan State and beat the Bears. There were no travel issues getting from Towson to Cold Spring Lane.

On Friday, Dec. 6, the team was to meet in the West Village around 6 pm to head to catch the charter and head to Burlington, Vermont for a Saturday matchup with the University of Vermont.

Around 4:30 p.m., we got a group text saying the flight had been pushed back and we were now meeting at 7 p.m. Around 5:30 p.m. another group text saying we were now meeting at 8 p.m. Around 6:30 p.m. another group text saying we were now to meet at 9 p.m.

We never left. Apparently the plane was having mechanical difficulties and would not fly that night. So, the team gathered Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m., got on a bus, drove to BWI and flew out just after 10 a.m. I am happy to say the plane had no mechanical issues and we made it safely to Burlington just before noon.

There was no shoot around, because Vermont had a women/men's doubleheader and Patrick Gymnasium wasn't available.

Whether or not the travel issues had an effect on the team over the final 10 minutes of the game we will never know. Towson only trailed by one with 10 and half minutes left in the game. The Tigers ultimately lost by 17.

What we do know is the team bounced back and beat UMBC on Tuesday night 77-71. Apparently the team had no travel issues getting from their dorms to SECU Arena.

Let's hope the rest of the travel schedule runs that smoothly.

Until next week, GO TIGERS!!!
