TOWSON, Md. – Saturday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team hosted Marshall in the last women's hoops contest of the decade, taking a 59-56 win over the Herd.
Senior
Nukiya Mayo led the Tigers with 21 points and scored the game-winner in the final game of the 2019 calendar year.
Kionna Jeter joined Mayo in double figures with 15 points along with
Q. Murray with 13 points. Mayo led Towson with eight rebounds.
How it Happened
- Marshall started the game with the lead and continued to hold with a nine-point advantage at the end of the first.
- Roles were reversed in the second quarter with a 20-point performance, eight coming from Nukiya Mayo and entering the halftime down 33-32.
- Back and forth scoring opened the third and Marshall led for a majority, with long scoring droughts on both ends.
- With 2:26 to go in the third Kionna Jeter made two free throws extending the lead to two, Marshall quickly tied it up.
- Low scoring plagued the fourth quarter, with 6:05 to go Towson trailed 52-51, no one scored again until 1:28 left to play.
- Jeter drained a three, putting the Tigers up 54-52, Marshall tied the game 25 seconds later.
- The next points came from Mayo, two free throws, putting Towson ahead once again 56-54. Again, like much of the last nine minutes, the Herd tied the game 56-56 with 26 seconds on the clock.
- On the next possession, Q. Murray dribbled down the clock near half court, setting up a play for Nukiya Mayo to take a three from the wing which she drained.
- Marshall took a timeout and missed a three attempt with one second on the clock as the buzzer sounded.
Beyond the Box
- The 21-point performance from Nukiya Mayo is her third game this year with 20 or more points and her ninth game this season in double figures.
- Kionna Jeter scored in double digits for the 12th-straight game dating back to March 16, 2019.
- Q. Murray continued her domination on assists, her 7 against the Herd are the second-most she has dished out this season. Murray also posted double figure points for the fifth time this season.
- Towson has now defeated Marshall twice in the last two meetings, taking a series lead of 2-1. Last season the Tigers concluded nonconference play at Marshall, taking a come-from-behind win and sparking a six-game win streak.

Towson returns to action on Friday, Jan. 3 in SECU Arena to open conference play against Elon at 7 p.m.
