TOWSON, Md. – Friday night opened conference play for the Towson University women's basketball team, falling to Elon 74-61.
Kionna Jeter led the Tigers with 21 points, while
Nukiya Mayo posted 13 and Mya Jones scored 11 off the bench.
LaKaitlin Wright led Towson in rebounds with seven rebounds and Jeter had a team-high four steals.
Towson returns to action on Sunday against William & Mary at 2 p.m.
How it Happened
- The first quarter started very slow with just six total points scored four minutes in. Elon led early, before Towson turned on the jets spurred by redshirt junior Kionna Jeter.
- Jeter went off with 12 points in the first, pushing Towson to an 18-14 lead at the end of one.
- Elon closed in more in the opening minutes of the second period, coming within one point of tying it up with 6:08 to go.
- A three ball from Jeter extended the lead to four, but back and forth scoring continued to the halftime break. Towson entered the locker room with a two-point lead, up 32-30.
- Starting the third quarter the Phoenix went on a 7-2 run and took the lead for the first time since the first quarter. By the end of the third, Elon was leading 48-44.
- Mya Jones scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter, putting the home team within two of tying it up. The Phoenix responded on the next possession and jumped out to a 57-48 lead with seven minutes to go.
- Scoring struggles continued for the Tigers as Elon continued to make shots and go to the free throw line. With 3:10 remaining the Phoenix were leading by 11.
- With 57 seconds to go Q. Murray cut the lead to eight, that was the closest Towson would get to tying up the game.
Beyond the Box
- Friday was Nukiya Mayo's ninth game in double figures this season.
- Kionna Jeter's 21 points were her third game this season with 20 or more points.
- Mya Jones had her sixth game of the season in double figures.
