TOWSON, Md. – Towson University student-athlete
Tom Flacco continues to rack up awards, being selected as a 2019 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American® for football, announced by the organization on Monday.
The redshirt senior quarterback was selected to the Second Team, one of two quarterbacks in Division I, FCS and FBS, to be voted Academic All-America®. He earned his undergraduate degree in 2018 from Rutgers University with a 4.00 GPA and currently has a 3.80 GPA for his Master's Degree, majoring in applied information technology.
Flacco becomes the first-ever Towson student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors in two different sports. He was a 2019 Second Team Academic All-America® in baseball as an outfielder. He is also the first Towson student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American® multiple times since Zach Fisher, a Tiger baseball player, was a three-time honoree from 2012-14.
This is the second year in a row where at least one Towson football player has been selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American®. In 2018,
Grant Udinski and
Zane Ventimiglia each earned academic All-America® recognition on the First Team and Second Team, respectively.
Flacco is the lone 2019 Academic All-American® for football from a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) school. He is one of three from a Maryland-based program, the other two are at the U.S. Naval Academy.
On the field, Flacco is a 2019 Second Team All-CAA quarterback and is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award for top player in FCS football. He started all 12 games at quarterback, throwing 60.4% for 2,831 yards, 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He finished his Towson career in the top-8 in passing touchdowns, passing yards and passing completions in program history.
Flacco was eligible for Academic All-America® after being an all-district® honoree in November. The awards are voted on by CoSIDA members across the country.
As a team, Towson earned its second winning season in a row, going 7-5, including four wins over programs that were ranked or receiving votes in the polls at the time of the game. The Tigers earned 10 All-CAA selections, the second straight year with at least 10 all-conference honorees.
