PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team played its final road game of the 2019 calendar year at Rutgers, falling 67-53.
The Tigers were led by
Kionna Jeter with 23 points and
Nukiya Mayo with 14. Jeter also led the team in rebounds with seven,
Q. Murray had five assists.
How it Happened
- The first quarter was back and forth with Towson holding a 4-2 lead for almost three minutes. Rutgers responded at the 4:48 mark and tied the game up before taking a seven-point lead to close the period.
- Kionna Jeter exploded in the second quarter, where she scored 15 points to put the Tigers within six points at halftime.
- Entering the third, Ryan Holder scored the first bucket cutting the lead to four. The home team responded putting six points between them once again before Jeter took over the court.
- With 7:05 to go in the third, Jeter scored a three and then stole the ball and drained another three tying the game.
- On Rutgers' next possession she stole the ball again and scored again on a fast break layup taking a two-point lead.
- The Scarlet Knights responded taking a seven-point lead and back-and-forth scoring returned to the court.
- Towson entered some foul trouble, sending Rutgers to the line as the home team extended the lead to 14 points at the end of the third.
- The home team made nine free throws in the fourth quarter, putting the game away. With 6:23 to go Q. Murray made a layup cutting the lead to 12. That was the closest Towson would get to tying it up.
Beyond the Box
- This is Kionna Jeter's second game with 20 or more points this season. She has scored in double figures every game (nine) this year and has 11-straight games with 10 or more points, dating back to the 2019 CAA title game against Drexel.
- Nukiya Mayo's 14 points are her seventh showing this season in double figures. The Bronx, New York native needs 96 more points to be in the program top-10 career scoring.
- Q. Murray's five assists are the sixth time this season she has dished out five or more, her season high nine assists were on Wednesday against Temple.
- Towson shot 33.3 percent from three against Rutgers, the fifth time this season shooting 30 percent or better from beyond the arc.
- Jeter made four three-point buckets today, her second performance this season with four three's made.
