BOSTON, Mass. – The Towson University women's basketball team fell in a battle at Northeastern on Sunday afternoon 77-68.
The Tigers were led by junior
Nukiya Mayo with 20 points while
Ryan Holder recorded her first double-double in the Black and Gold with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Towson moves to 13-9 on the season and 7-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) while the Huskies improve to 15-7 on the year and 5-6 in the CAA.
How it Happened
- Senior Maia Lee opened the game with the first bucket and a back-and-forth scoring period ensued.
- Northeastern took an eight-point lead, highest of the quarter, with four minutes remaining in the first. A layup and two free throws from Nukiya Mayo cut the lead to four and she cut it again to three with a single free throw.
- The Huskies led 13-10 with just over two minutes to go before extending the lead to five. Ryan Holder responded with a layup and two good foul shots to cut the lead to one, as the home team ended the first with a one-point advantage.
- In the second period the Tigers did not have the shooting advantage as Northeastern was shooting 50 percent from the field and from three. With 5:45 to go in the half Towson cut the lead to three, but the Huskies pulled ahead for a 10-point lead entering the locker room.
- Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter opened the third with a three and cut the lead to seven with nine minutes to go.
- Northeastern went on a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 14 before sending Jeter to the line. At the 2:46 mark the guard made both free throws, but the home team responded with a layup 16 seconds later.
- The Tigers went to the line four more times in the period, ending the third down by nine.
- The home team entered the fourth leading 55-46, but Towson was not backing down. For the first seven minutes of the fourth the Huskies owned a double-figure advantage.
- With 3:08 left to go, Q. Murray made two free throws and cut the lead to 10. Less than 30 seconds later Murray was fouled on a layup and cut the lead to seven after the three-point play.
- Northeastern reached an 11-point lead once again, with 2:12 to go, but a three from Mayo cut it to eight and Danielle Durjan made a jumper cutting the lead to six.
- Closing the 72-66 advantage was not out of reach, even after Stella Clark made a free throw extending the lead to seven.
- Jalynn Holmes got in the paint for a layup with 57 seconds left, creating a five-point game and only needing two possessions to tie the game up or take the lead. The Huskies took a timeout with 33 seconds to go and on the inbounding play had a turnover with a steal from Durjan.
- A missed layup on that Tiger possession forced the road team to foul and put the game out of reach with a nine-point lead and 10 seconds left.
