Two Hit First Home Runs as Tigers in Baseball's Defeat at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Two Tigers hit their first home runs with the program as the Towson University baseball team (0-1) fell to Davidson (1-0) 13-5 in the season opener in North Carolina.
 
Towson scored two runs in the second to tie the game early.  Davidson scored five in the bottom of the fourth, taking the lead for the rest of the contest.
 
Key Game Stats:
  • In his collegiate debut, Trent Gast-Woodard went 2-for-4, including a two-run home run in his first-ever at bat.  Zach Piazza also hit his first home run, going 1-for-5, while Tom Flacco hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Three Tigers had a multi-hit day, including Colin Conroy going 2-for-4 with a run.
  • On the pitching end, Josh Seils got the loss, going 3.1 innings with six runs allowed and striking out four.  Oluwasayo Kintunde and Cam Mason each made their collegiate debut: Kintunde had three innings thrown with four runs and three strikeouts while Mason did not allow a run in the eighth, striking out one.
  • For Davidson, Zach Nussbaum finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs while Max Bazin concluded at 2-for-5, scoring three times.  Casey Sutherland picked up the win, throwing six innings with six strikeouts and three runs surrendered.
How it Happened:
  • Davidson scored two in the opening inning off starter Josh Seils (0-1) to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
  • Towson answered in the top of the second; two batters after Tom Flacco reached on an infield single, Trent Gast-Woodard, in his first career at-bat, blasted a two-out pitch to right-center for a two-run home run off Davidson starter Casey Sutherland (1-0), tying the game at 2-2.
  • Davidson rallied in the bottom of the fourth with five runs, batting around in the order, to lead 7-2.
  • In the top of the sixth, Zach Piazza drilled a ball over the left field fence for his first career home run as a Tiger, a solo shot, making the score 7-3 Davidson.  Davidson got two solo home runs in the following half-inning, then added another in the seventh.
  • Flacco earned his third hit of the night in the top of the eighth, grounding a ball inbetween first and second to bring home Colin Conroy, putting the score at 11-4.
  • After Davidson added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, Brad Powers grounded a single to center to bring in a run, setting the eventual final score at 13-5.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Gast-Woodard and Piazza are the first Tigers to hit a home run in the season opener since 2013, when Dominic Fratantuono hit a dinger in the opener vs. McNeese State.
  • Piazza has 35 home runs in college play, including one at Towson and 34 with Limestone.
  • Five runs scored ties the most amount scored by Towson in a home opener since 2013.
