DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team (0-3) battled against Davidson (3-0) in a pitching duel in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader, but the Tigers fell 15-3 in game one and 4-1 in the second contest.
Game one saw Davidson score the contest's first 13 runs. Towson battled with three runs in the seventh but could not bridge the gap.
In game two,
Kody Reeser took Towson into the sixth inning with a 1-1 tie. Davidson got a run in the sixth and two unearned in the eighth to sweep the doubleheader.
Key Game Stats:
- Richard Miller hit safely in each game, combining to go 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles and a run. Trent Gast-Woodard hit 2-for-4 with two RBI in the first game while Javon Fields was 3-for-3, including a triple and a run, in the second game.
- Gavin Weyman got the loss in the first game, having five runs, only four earned, in 3.2 innings in his start. In game two, Kody Reeser, despite the defeat, went 5.1 innings with two runs and seven strikeouts, with Austin Weber completing the game for 2.2 innings, two unearned runs and a strikeout.
- For Davidson, Brett Centracchio combined to hit 6-for-9 for three runs while Ruben Fontes was 2-for-7 with four RBI and two runs. Each Davidson starter got a victory: Allen Barry in game one with six innings, no runs and six strikeouts and Josh Hudson in game two with six innings thrown, a run and five strikeouts.
How it Happened (Game One):
- Davidson scored two in the bottom of the first off Towson starter Gavin Weyman (0-1) with an RBI groundout from Eric Jones and another run scoring off an error to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
- With two outs in the fourth, the Wildcats put three runs across, capped by Ruben Fontes hitting a two-run triple to right. The next inning, Davidson added three more, then five in the sixth, including a grand slam from Trevor Candelaria, to go up 13-0.
- Towson got the hitting going in the top of the seventh, beginning the inning with back-to-back singles from Zach Piazza and Richard Miller. Tom Flacco lined a single to right-center to bring in a run, then Trent Gast-Woodard crushed a pitch to the left-center gap for a two-run double. The comeback fell short as Davidson scored two more runs later to win 15-3.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- Kody Reeser (0-1) began the game with a trio of 1-2-3 innings on the mound for Towson, capped by three looking strikeouts in the third.
- In the bottom of the fourth with first and third and no out, Towson got two outs on a ground out unassisted to first and getting out the back runner, but the lead runner scored to give Davidson a 1-0 lead.
- Next half-inning with two outs, Javon Fields looped a ball over the right fielder's head and legged out a triple. Next pitch, Dirk Masters brought Fields in with a ground ball single back up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
- Reeser continued into the sixth, when he was pulled with first and third with one out. Fontes hit a sacrifice fly to center to get the runner home and give Davidson a 2-1 lead.
- Towson got the potential game-tying run on base in the eighth with Colin Conroy notching a single, but he could not get closer. Davidson added two runs in the eighth, each unearned after scoring on a fielding error at first, to go up three. The Wildcats held for a 4-1 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Today became a doubleheader due to expected inclement weather in the Davidson area tomorrow. In addition, the first game was delayed from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Up Next:
Towson will have another road series next weekend, flying to Georgia for a three-game set against Kennesaw State. First game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.
