Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Kennesaw, Picks Up First Win of 2019

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Towson University baseball team (1-4) earned its first victory of the season in a doubleheader split at Kennesaw State (3-2) on Saturday night.

Towson took the first game 5-2 in 10 innings, then fell in the second contest 5-2 to Kennesaw State.

Game one saw both teams tied at 2-2 after the third inning, with neither side scoring until extras.  Towson combined three hits and a hit-by-pitch to push three runs across the plate and take the victory.

In game two, Towson scored two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit in half, but Kennesaw State held the advantage the rest of the way.

Key Stats:
  • Tom Flacco earned multiple hits in both games, going a combined 5-for-8 (.625) with a walk, two runs and an RBI.  Zach Piazza notched three RBI in game one, going 2-for-5 in that contest.  Dirk Masters hit safely in both games, going 2-for-6 (.333) while Trey Martinez reached base four times in total off two hits and two walks.
  • Despite a no decision, Josh Seils had the strong start of his Towson career, going 6.1 innings with two runs, only one earned, with four strikeouts in his start in game one.  Austin Weber finished the game and picked up the victory with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out five batters.
  • Game two saw Oluwasayo Kintunde, Matt Watters and Joe Enea combine for 4.2 innings of relief with one run and seven strikeouts.
  • For Kennesaw State, Tyler Simon combined to go 4-for-5 with two walks and two RBI.  Ryan Kennedy got the victory in the second contest, throwing five innings with two runs and strikeouts.
How it Happened (Game One):
  • Towson got on the board first: Tom Flacco hit a bouncer down the left field line for a one-out double, then on the next pitch, Zach Piazza hit a line drive opposite way to bring in Flacco, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
  • In the third, Brad Powers swung at a 0-2 pitch and sent it towards the road past the right field wall for his first home run of the season to make it 2-0 Tigers.
  • Kennesaw tied the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Tyler Simon and an RBI ground out from Jake Franklin two batters later to put the score at 2-2.
  • Towson threatened in the top of the eighth, with Dirk Masters running out a single on a chopper to third, then taking second on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Martinez.  Masters eventually got to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded after a pop-out ended the half-inning.  Kennesaw looked to take the lead in its half with first and second and one away; Austin Weber (1-0) struck out the next batter then got a fly out to right to end the inning with no runs.
  • The top of the tenth saw Noah Cabrera get hit by the first pitch, then go to second on a sacrifice bunt by Masters.  Martinez placed a ground ball millimeters to the right of third base for an RBI single, bringing in Cabrera to give Towson the lead.  Three batters later with first and second and two away, Piazza also used a ground ball, this one down the first base line, to earn a two-run double and give Towson a 5-2 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning.
  • Weber finished the game with the three-run lead, striking out two and stranding two for the scoreless inning, ensuring the 5-2 Towson victory.
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Kennesaw State got on the board first with a solo home run by Alex Carballo off the opening pitch from Gavin Weyman (0-2) for a 1-0 Owls lead.  Next inning, the Owls added another run on an error via fielder's choice.
  • In the fourth, the Owls took advantage of a couple of infield hits and ensuing errors to get two runs across and lead 4-0.
  • Towson responded in the top of the fifth, getting the bases loaded with one out.  Colin Conroy raced home on a wild pitch, then Flacco hit a bouncing infield single to the right side to bring in Masters, cutting the deficit in half at 4-2.
  • Kennesaw got a run back in the bottom of the sixth off a double steal.  Towson could not get closer and fell 5-2.
