Three Tigers Multi-Hit in Baseball's Defeat at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Towson University baseball team (1-5) tried to come back with four runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings combined but came up short in an 11-5 defeat at Kennesaw State (4-2) on Sunday afternoon.

After KSU went up 10-1 in the opening four innings, Towson scored in the next three to pull within five runs but did not get closer to fall in the rubber match.

How it Happened (Game One):
  • Towson got on the scoreboard quickly in the first, started by a Tom Flacco walk and a Javon Fields single on a line drive to left off KSU starter Josh Coburn (1-0).  The runners advanced twice on the next batter, a wild pitch and a passed ball, plating Flacco for a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, Kennesaw State began the frame with a Jaylen Smith double to left then a Terence Norman RBI bloop single to tie the game off Kody Reeser (0-2).  KSU ended up putting six runs up in the inning, capped by a Garrett Hodges two-run home run to right, to lead 6-1.
  • Cam Clark made his collegiate debut in the bottom of the third and began with a scoreless inning.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Hodges's second home run, bringing in three runs, helped a four-run inning for the Owls to put the score at 10-1 home team.
  • Towson got a run back in the next half-inning, beginning with a two-out double by Fields.  Next batter, Brad Powers put a single into right field, bringing Fields around from second to score.  Towson trailed 10-2.
  • Next inning, with two in scoring position, Dirk Masters arced a ball down the left field line for a double and two runs in, bringing Towson to within six at 10-4.
  • The attempted comeback continued in the seventh as Powers took the second pitch of the inning deep for a solo shot.  Towson got two more runners on base but could not score more runs.  Kennesaw State got a run back in the eighth and took the win 11-5.
