KENNESAW, Ga. – The Towson University baseball team (1-5) tried to come back with four runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings combined but came up short in an 11-5 defeat at Kennesaw State (4-2) on Sunday afternoon.
After KSU went up 10-1 in the opening four innings, Towson scored in the next three to pull within five runs but did not get closer to fall in the rubber match.
Key Stats:
- Brad Powers hit his second home run of the season, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Javon Fields reached base four times, hitting 3-for-4 with a walk and a run while Dirk Masters compiled two hits off four at bats for a double and two RBI.
- Kody Reeser got the loss for Towson with six runs in a two-inning start. Jake Pecilunas, Connor Coyle and Matt Watters all had scoreless outings in relief.
- For Kennesaw State, Garrett Hodges hit two home runs, combining to go 3-for-3 with three runs, two walks and five RBI. Josh Coburn notched the victory in a start, going five innings with two runs and four strikeouts.
How it Happened (Game One):
- Towson got on the scoreboard quickly in the first, started by a Tom Flacco walk and a Javon Fields single on a line drive to left off KSU starter Josh Coburn (1-0). The runners advanced twice on the next batter, a wild pitch and a passed ball, plating Flacco for a 1-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the second, Kennesaw State began the frame with a Jaylen Smith double to left then a Terence Norman RBI bloop single to tie the game off Kody Reeser (0-2). KSU ended up putting six runs up in the inning, capped by a Garrett Hodges two-run home run to right, to lead 6-1.
- Cam Clark made his collegiate debut in the bottom of the third and began with a scoreless inning.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Hodges's second home run, bringing in three runs, helped a four-run inning for the Owls to put the score at 10-1 home team.
- Towson got a run back in the next half-inning, beginning with a two-out double by Fields. Next batter, Brad Powers put a single into right field, bringing Fields around from second to score. Towson trailed 10-2.
- Next inning, with two in scoring position, Dirk Masters arced a ball down the left field line for a double and two runs in, bringing Towson to within six at 10-4.
- The attempted comeback continued in the seventh as Powers took the second pitch of the inning deep for a solo shot. Towson got two more runners on base but could not score more runs. Kennesaw State got a run back in the eighth and took the win 11-5.
