Baseball Felled in Mid-Week Matchup at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.V. – The Towson University baseball team (1-6) fell to West Virginia (5-3) 8-3 in the first mid-week game of the year for the Tigers, despite the second home run of the season for Zach Piazza.
 
Key Stats:
  • Zach Piazza hit 2-for-3 for the game, including his two-run home run in the top of the seventh.  Richard Miller had the other run off a 2-for-4 day, scoring on a Colin Conroy RBI ground out, while Trent Gast-Woodard was 1-for-3 with a double.
  • The loss went to Dallas Repine with five runs in 2.1 innings, adding a strikeout.  Joe Enea went 1.2 scoreless innings while Connor Coyle and Cam Clark also had no runs charged in their outings.
  • For WVU, Darius Hill went 3-for-4 including a solo home run while Andrew Zitel brought in three RBI, finishing the day 2-for-4 with a double and run.  Nick Snyder got the victory, throwing three scoreless innings with six strikeouts. 
How it Happened:
  • WVU scored three runs in the bottom of the first, capped by a two-run single by Andrew Zitel off Towson starter Dallas Repine (0-1), to lead 3-0.
  • Later, WVU added a run in each the second, third and fifth innings, to go up 6-0.
  • Towson got its bats going in the top of the seventh.  After Brad Powers was hit by a pitch, Zach Piazza sent a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run.  Later with one out, Colin Conroy hit to the right side for a ground out to bring in Richard Miller, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
  • WVU got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth, each unearned, to lead 8-3.
  • Towson threatened in the top of the ninth by getting the bases loaded with one out, but could not score.  WVU took the win 8-3.
Up Next:
Towson will open at home this weekend at Schuerholz Park, hosting Lehigh on Friday, March 1st at 2 p.m.
