SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Despite a one-run, seven-inning start by
Gavin Weyman in game two, the Towson University baseball team (1-8) fell in both games in the Friday doubleheader at Sacramento State (6-7) 5-0 and 1-0.
Sacramento State scored three runs in the top of the first in game one and held the lead the rest of the way. Towson outhit Sacramento State in the second game and battled to a stalemate through six innings, then a pair of hits to left field for the Hornets gave the home team a run, enough for the win.
Key Stats:
- Two Tigers had multi-hit performances in game two: Brad Powers and Zach Piazza each were 2-for-4. In game one, Jack Rotteveel had a double while Colin Conroy had a single and a stolen base.
- Despite the loss and five runs surrendered, Josh Seils went six innings and allowed just four hits and struck out four in his start in game one, with John Cranston finishing the game on two scoreless frames, striking out three.
- Gavin Weyman went seven innings in the game two start with one run and four strikeouts, allowing a total of six baserunners. Matt Watters threw a flawless eighth inning, striking out one.
- For Sacramento State, Ryan Walstad hit safely in each game, combining to go 3-for-6 with two runs. Parker Brahms pitched seven innings in game one with six strikeouts for the win while Travis Martizia got the victory in game two off two innings in relief.
How it Happened (Game One):
- In the bottom of the first, Sacramento State got its first three hitters on base via single, walk and RBI double by Ryan Walsted. The next two batters got RBI off a ground out and a Steven Moretto double for a 3-0 home team lead.
- Josh Seils (0-2) notched 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth, but in the fifth, Matt Smith singled and stole second, later coming home on a wild pitch. Next inning, Trevor Doyle hit a one-out triple, scoring the next at bat on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 Hornets.
- From the bullpen, John Cranston pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Towson fell 5-0.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- Game two started as a pitching duel, as Gavin Weyman (0-3) started off strong in his start. The Tigers got out of the bottom of the fourth as Weyman grabbed a comebacker to the mound and got the runner out at the plate, then Trey Martinez threw to second to get the batter out.
- The Tigers threatened in each the fifth and sixth inning with runners in scoring position, but could not score.
- In the bottom of the seventh with two out, Griffin McCormick doubled on a fly ball down the left field line. Doyle followed with a similar hit to left to bring in McCormick and give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
- Brad Powers had an eighth inning single, but Towson did not plate a runner and fell 1-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Weyman's start tonight is statistically the best individual start of the season. Previously, Seils had a 6.1-inning start with two runs, only one earned, vs. Kennesaw State on February 23rd.
