SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Towson University baseball team (1-10) attempted comebacks in both games of its Saturday doubleheader, but late scoring helped Sacramento State (8-7) take each game of the twinbill.
The Hornets won game one 13-4, despite the Tigers earning runs in four of their first five innings, and game two 12-2, with Towson trailing just 3-2 after six innings.
Key Stats:
- Javon Fields hit safely in both games, combining to go 3-for-8 with a run. Richard Miller hit his first home run of the season in game one, scoring twice on the day, while Dirk Masters had an RBI in each game.
- Each of the Towson starters got losses: Kody Reeser (0-3) had five runs in 2.1 innings in game one while Oluwasayo Kintunde (0-1) had three runs in as many innings in the second contest. Cam Clark, David Tiskevics and John Cranston all had scoreless relief appearances.
- For Sacramento State, Mark Vincelli-Simard combined to go 3-for-8 with a home run, five RBI and four runs. Scott Randall won game one with five innings thrown and four runs allowed while Brady Rodriguez had the same amount of innings in a game two start for a win, allowing one run.
How it Happened (Game One):
- Towson got on the board first in the opening inning as Brad Powers reached on an error at third, allowing Colin Conroy to score. Next inning, Richard Miller launched a 2-1 pitch over the right-center wall for a solo home run, giving Towson a 2-0 advantage.
- The Hornets rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the third, scoring on six different at bats, to lead 7-2.
- Towson got two runs back in the following two innings, a fourth inning RBI double by Dirk Masters and a Trey Martinez RBI single the following frame to pull the Tigers within three at 7-4.
- Sacramento State held the lead the rest of the way, adding six runs its final four innings at bat to win 13-4.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- The Hornets scored the first three runs over the opening three innings.
- Javon Fields led off the fourth with a double and took third next at bat. Zach Piazza brought Fields in with a sacrifice fly to put Towson on the scoreboard.
- In the top of the sixth, Masters got his second RBI of the day with a ground out to bring in Jack Rotteveel to bring Towson within one at 3-2.
- The home team got nine runs combined in the seventh and eighth to take the victory 12-2.
