TOWSON, Md. – Six innings with one run allowed by
Gavin Weyman was not enough as the Towson University baseball team (2-12) fell to Cornell (3-8) 4-2 after a late scoring of runs by the Big Red.
Towson led 2-0 after six innings, including an RBI single by
Brad Powers. Cornell scored in each of the final three frames, taking the lead in the eighth with a two-run single by Austin Flematti, to win the game.
Key Stats:
- Six different Tigers hit safely in the game, led by Brad Powers finishing the game going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Javon Fields was 1-for-4, stealing his third base of the season.
- On the mound, Gavin Weyman had his second quality start in a row, throwing six innings with one run and six strikeouts. The loss went to Matt Watters (0-1), who had two runs surrendered in the eighth.
- For Cornell, Austin Flematti concluded 2-for-3, bringing in two runs and scoring once. Jon Zacharias went four innings in his start with a run and four strikeouts. John Natoli (2-1) got the win in relief by finishing the game with 3.1 innings thrown, not allowing a baserunner.
How it Happened:
- Towson scored the first run in the bottom of the second inning on a strange play: with first and second with one out, Trent Gast-Woodard grounded to third. The third baseman stepped on third base and threw towards first, sailing the ball over the first baseman. Nick Brown came all the way from second to score and put Towson up 1-0.
- Gavin Weyman continued to throw strongly on the mound, getting out of a man on and no out in the sixth inning with a strikeout, a pop out and a ground out.
- Next half-inning, Tom Flacco got hit by a pitch and stole second. With two out, Brad Powers stroked a single to left, bringing in Flacco and giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.
- Cornell got a run in the seventh off a wild pitch, then in the eighth, Austin Flematti hit a two-run single to left to give the Big Red a 3-2 advantage. In the ninth, Dave Giuliano doubled and came around on a pair of fly balls to make it 4-2 Cornell, the eventual final score.
