Baseball Splits Sunday Twinbill, Earns Victory over Cornell

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (3-13) used quality starting pitching to pick up a split on Sunday, defeating Cornell (3-9) 3-2 in the early game and falling later to Fordham (11-9) 6-1.

Game one saw Towson scored a pair of runs late and hold on with key relief pitching for the win.  In the nightcap, a six-inning scoreless affair was broken when Fordham scored a run of runs in each of the final three frames.

Key Stats:
  • Kody Reeser (1-3) earned his first victory of the year, going 6.1 innings with an unearned run and five strikeouts in the game one win.  Oluwasayo Kintunde started game two and went five scoreless, striking out five.
  • On the hitting side, Javon Fields was 4-for-8 on the day with a double, two runs and two stolen bases.  Brad Powers finished 3-for-7 with a home run, a double and two RBI.
  • From the bullpen, David Tiskevics got the team's first save of the season, closing out the first game with a scoreless inning.  The loss of game two went to Cam Clark (0-1) with two runs, only one earned, in 1.2 innings, adding two strikeouts.
How it Happened (Game One):
  • Towson got on the board first in the opening inning as Javon Fields doubled and took third on a ground out to the right side by Tom Flacco.  Next batter, a ground ball to third turned into an attempt at the plate, but an error by the catcher allowed Fields to score and make it 1-0.
  • Cornell tied the game in the next inning with an RBI single by Matt Collins, making it 1-1.
  • As Kody Reeser continued to roll through the Cornell lineup, Brad Powers came through in the bottom of the sixth with a double off the left field wall, bringing in Zach Piazza to give Towson the lead.  Next inning, Fields scored again, charging down from third on a wild pitch and scoring to make it 3-1 Tigers.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, John Cranston entered on the mound with first and second with no outs.  Three pitches later, he had a ground ball double play and a popout to end the inning with no runs.
  • Cornell got a run back in the ninth, but David Tiskevics held and finished the inning with a fly out to give Towson the 3-2 victory.
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Game two was a pitcher's duel for a long time, with Oluwasayo Kintunde going the first five innings with no runs allowed.  After six, the score was 0-0.
  • Fordham took advantage of a couple of errors in the seventh on a ball thrown into the outfield on a steal attempt, allowing two runners to score.
  • Powers took a pitch deep in the next half-inning to earn a home run, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1.
  • The Rams got insurance runs in the eighth off a couple of wild pitches, then added two more in the ninth to seal the game 6-1.
By the Numbers:
  • Towson's four starting pitchers this weekend combined to go 2-0, allowing just one run in 25.1 innings for a 0.36 ERA, striking out 22 batters.  The team as a whole had a 2.50 ERA and 28 strikeouts.
