Baseball Notches 10 Hits vs. Nation’s #1 Ranked Team, Falls at N.C. State

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (3-13) had nine different Tigers hit safely to combine for 10 hits on the night against a team ranked No. 1 in the country but was defeated by North Carolina State (19-1) 11-1 on Tuesday night in Raleigh.
 
Key Stats:
  • Javon Fields reached base three times tonight, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI triple to score Dirk MastersTom Flacco was 1-for-2, drawing a walk.  Each Alex Parker and Jay Sanford had their first hits of the season tonight.
  • On the mound, Matt Watters (0-2) got the loss in the start with four runs and a strikeout in 1.2 innings.  Austin Weber pitched two innings with one run allowed while John Cranston finished the contest with 1.1 scoreless frames.
  • For N.C. State, Will Wilson concluded 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs and four RBI.  Nolan Clenney (1-0) got the win, coming in relief in the first and throwing 3.1 innings with a run surrendered.
How it Happened:
  • Towson looked for an early rally as Javon Fields led with a single and Brad Powers walked to put first and second with no out, later getting the bases full after a Tom Flacco single, but could not score a run.
  • N.C. State scored three runs in the bottom of the first off three consecutive RBI plays, started by a Patrick Bailey RBI double, to lead 3-0.  Next inning, a Will Wilson RBI double put the home team up 4-0.
  • The Tigers threatened in the top of the third, again getting first and second with no out on a Fields walk and Powers single, later loading the bases with a Flacco walk.  The Wolfpack escaped with no runs again.
  • Fields continued to be strong at the plate: with two outs and Dirk Masters on first, Fields roped a ball over the centerfielder's head for a triple, scoring Masters to make it 5-1 N.C. State.
  • Joe Enea came in and finished the fourth and kept N.C. State scoreless in the fifth.  In the sixth, N.C. State scored twice, and added four more in the seventh, to lead 11-1.
  • A couple of pinch hitters came through with hits as Jay Sanford and Isaiah Winikur hit singles to put first and second with no out in the eighth.  Later in the ninth, Alex Parker made his season debut with a ground ball single down the left field line.  Towson could not catch up and fell 11-1.
By the Numbers:
  • Coming into the game, N.C. State was ranked No. 1 in the country by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
  • Brad Powers has hit safely in his last six games, while Javon Fields has reached base in his last eight games.
  • Andrew Smith made his collegiate debut in a pinch hit role in the ninth while Alex Parker made his season debut, also with a pinch hit appearance in the ninth.
