TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (3-16, 0-1 CAA) was matched in a pitching duel vs. reigning league champion UNC Wilmington (12-10, 1-0 CAA) for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener, narrowing falling 3-1 at Schuerholz Park.
UNCW scored three runs in the top of the second and held the rest of the way; Towson scored in the sixth and got the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but could not bridge the final gap.
Key Stats:
- As a team, Towson mustered eight hits, with six Tigers hitting safely.
- Javon Fields and Colin Conroy each had multi-hit days, going 2-for-4, with Fields scoring Towson's run. Brad Powers had a sacrifice fly, bringing in Fields in the sixth inning.
- Josh Seils (1-3) got the defeat, having six innings thrown, the fourth-consecutive start where the sophomore has gone at least six frames, having three runs and three strikeouts. David Tiskevics went 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts while John Cranston finished the ninth with two strikeouts in as batters faced.
- For UNCW, Kep Brown was 2-for-3, adding a walk, an RBI and a run. Luke Gesell (2-2) picked up the win in six innings pitched with one run, then Landen Roupp had the save with the last three innings pitched.
How it Happened:
- UNC Wilmington got on the board first in the top of the second, with Greg Jones hitting a double to start the inning. UNCW eventually scored him on a wild pitch and two more off singles to lead 3-0.
- With Josh Seils pitching well following the second inning, Towson struck in the bottom of the sixth. Javon Fields doubles on a ball down the left field line and took third on a Colin Conroy infield single. Brad Powers brought in Fields on a sacrifice fly to deep center to cut the deficit down to a pair of runs.
- After David Tiskevics and John Cranston kept UNCW at three runs into the ninth, Towson had a last gasp in the final inning with Conroy reaching on an infield single. Conroy eventually got to third, but the Tigers could not muster another runner and fell 3-1.

- Javon Fields has reached base safely in his last 10 games and has a six-game hitting streak. Colin Conroy has hit safely in his last five games.
- Josh Seils, the reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week, has thrown at least six innings each of his last four starts.
- In five home games thus far in 2019, Towson has allowed just 15 runs, an average of three per game at Schuerholz Park.
