TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (3-17, 0-2 CAA) attempted a late comeback vs. UNC Wilmington (13-10, 2-0 CAA), but came up short in an 8-4 defeat against the defending league champion.
With Towson leading 2-0 after four strong innings from
Gavin Weyman (0-4), UNC Wilmington scored three in the fifth and four in the eighth. Towson scored in each the final two innings, but did not get enough on its deficit.
Key Stats:
- Trent Gast-Woodard reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI double and a run scored. Colin Conroy finished 1-for-3, scoring a run.
- The loss went to Gavin Weyman who, despite four scoreless innings to begin, went 4.2 frames with three runs and four strikeouts. Austin Weber and Matt Watters each had scoreless outings out of the bullpen.
- For UNCW, Noah Bridges was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Greg Jones concluded 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs. Brody Lawson (3-0) won the game, going 7.1 innings with three runs and seven strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- In the bottom of the first, Towson scored twice in the inning, beginning with Javon Fields walking and taking second on an error. Colin Conroy singled to put runners on the corners, then Brad Powers reached on a fielding error at first, sending in Fields. After a Zach Piazza sacrifice bunt, Richard Miller brought in a run on a ground out to make it 2-0 Tigers.
- Going into the fifth, UNCW got second and third with no outs. Gavin Weyman struck out the next two batters and engaged in a duel with the next batter, but UNCW followed with three straight singles to bring in three runs and lead 3-2.
- Towson looked to even up in the seventh with Piazza reaching third, but he was stranded. UNCW got six consecutive hits with two outs in the eighth to score four runs and lead 7-2.
- The Tigers got a run back in the eighth as Trent Gast-Woodard came all the way around, getting home on a wild pitch to make it 7-3.
- After UNCW scored a run in the ninth, Towson got a run off a Gast-Woodard RBI double to bring in Jay Sanford, but the comeback came up short. UNCW took the win 8-4.
By the Numbers:
- Though Javon Fields lost a six-game hitting streak, he has reached base in each of his last 11 games. Colin Conroy extended his hitting streak to six games.
