TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (3-18, 0-3 CAA) scored five runs in the fifth inning to lead reigning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion UNC Wilmington (14-10, 3-0 CAA), but fell to the Seahawks 11-6 in the series finale.

Towson led 5-3 after five innings after the first four had been scoreless by both sides.  After UNCW scored eight in the top of the sixth, Towson got a run back in the ninth but did not get closer.

Key Stats:

  • Oluwasayo Kintunde was scoreless in his first four innings of the start, finishing with 4.1 frames thrown with three runs, only one earned, and eight strikeouts.  The loss went to David Tiskevics (0-1) with five runs charged in the sixth.  John Cranston, Austin Weber and Jake Pecilunas all had scoreless outings from the bullpen.
  • For UNCW, each Greg Jones and Riley Zayicek were 2-for-4 with two RBI.  The win went to reliever Justin Crump (3-0), who went 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
How it Happened:
  • The game began with a pitching duel with Oluwasayo Kintunde holding down UNCW with strikeouts and Gage Herring inducing outs in the field vs. Towson.  The first four innings were scoreless.
  • UNCW broke the stalemate in the fifth inning, using a couple of RBI appearances, including a two-run single by Riley Zayicek, to go up 3-0.
  • Towson struck back in the following half-inning.  Getting the bases loaded with one out, Zach Piazza hit a single to shallow right to bring in a run.  Next batter, Richard Miller cleared the bases with a triple off the right-center field wall to give Towson the lead.  Trent Gast-Woodard brought Miller home on a fielder's choice, giving the Tigers a 5-3 advantage.
  • The visitors got back in front the next inning, using four extra-base hits and a couple of free passes to piece together eight runs, making it 11-5 UNCW.
  • Towson had a late comeback attempt in the ninth as Miller earned a double off the right-center field wall to bring in Brad Powers, but the Tigers fell 11-6.
