FAIRFAX, Va. – The Towson University baseball team (3-19) stayed close most of the day in a mid-week contest at George Mason (10-13), but fell 6-2 in Fairfax.
Towson had the game's first lead and trailed 4-2 after the top of the sixth, but runs for the Patriots in the sixth and seventh gave the game to George Mason.
Key Stats:
- Tom Flacco went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored while Javon Fields had another multi-hit day, going 2-for-5 with a triple, a run and a stolen base.
- The loss went to Dallas Repine (0-4) with three runs charged in his start, going 2.1 innings. Jake Pecilunas went 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four batters. John Cranston pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout.
- For George Mason, three of the six runs came on sacrifice flies, while Tim Quinn had a solo home run in a 1-for-3 afternoon. Patrick Halligan (2-2) picked up the win, going 5.1 frames with two runs and a pair of strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- Towson attacked right away, beginning with a leadoff triple down the left field line by Javon Fields. Two batters later, Zach Piazza brought him home on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Towson.
- The home team got three runs in the bottom of the second, including a pair of sacrifice flies, to go up 3-1. Next inning, George Mason got two runners to scoring position, then Jake Pecilunas struck out the next two batters to keep the deficit at two.
- In the fifth, Towson, using Jake Pecilunas and Connor Coyle, had six strikeouts in a span of seven batters. But, George Mason got a run across on an RBI single in the fifth, despite an outfield assist on a throw to second by Tom Flacco, to lead 4-1.
- Towson pieced hits together in the top of the sixth as Flacco blasted a single to right and stole a base. Nick Brown brought him in with a double to deep left. The Tigers got help as Noah Cabrera and Dirk Masters each got hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a double play ending the inning with Towson trailing 4-2.
- George Mason went back up by three in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to lead 5-2. The Patriots added another in the seventh off a solo home run by Tim Quinn to lead 6-2, the eventual final score.
By the Numbers:
- Javon Fields has reached base in 13 consecutive games, the longest such streak for Towson this season.
