FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Towson University baseball team (3-20) and Florida Gulf Coast (17-8) had a 1-1 tie score after four innings, but the Tigers trailed by five into the final inning, seeing its ninth inning comeback attempt come up short in a 6-3 defeat.
An RBI single by
Javon Fields in the top of the third tied the game as the sides were at a stalemate through four frames. FGCU scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Towson drew free passes and scored twice in the ninth, putting the tying run to the plate, but could not bridge the final gap.
Key Stats:
- Trent Gast-Woodard had a multi-hit day for Towson, going 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. Javon Fields had an RBI single to go 1-for-5 while Zach Piazza was 1-for-4.
- The loss went to Josh Seils (1-4), who had five runs, four of them earned, in five innings with five strikeouts. Matt Watters went 2.1 innings scoreless with two strikeouts.
- Richie Garcia was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run for FGCU. Mason Studstill (4-0) was the winner, throwing eight innings in the start with seven strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- Strong defense by Dirk Masters and Tom Flacco prevented a big inning for FGCU in the first, but a sacrifice fly gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead after one.
- Into the top of the third, a single by Trent Gast-Woodard led to Noah Cabrera getting to second. With two out, Javon Fields hit a frozen rope up the middle for a single, bringing in Cabrera and tying the game at 1-1.
- FGCU got back the lead in the fifth off a solo home run by Richie Garcia. Later, an Alex Brait RBI single to bring in an unearned run made it 3-1. Next inning, FGCU scored three more, including an RBI single and sacrifice fly, to go up 6-1.
- The Tigers had a last gasp in the top of the ninth, being patient at the plate and drawing three free passes to load the bases with one out. A fielder's choice by Noah Cabrera and a reach on error by Dirk Masters put two runs across and the tying run to the plate, but Sebastian Gruszecki ended the game with a strikeout to finish. FGCU won 6-3.
