FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Towson University baseball team (3-21) outhit Florida Gulf Coast (18-8) on Saturday afternoon but fell in the second game of the series 5-2.
Towson led 2-1 after one-and-a-half innings in a game where no team scored more than one run in an inning. FGCU took the lead in the fifth and held the rest of the way for the victory.
Key Stats:
- Towson outhit FGCU 9-8 in the day, led by multi-hit performances by Zach Piazza and Noah Cabrera, who each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Richard Miller and Brad Powers each hit a triple, with the latter scoring.
- The loss went to Gavin Weyman (0-5), who had three runs, just two earned, in 5.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
- For FGCU, Alex Brait was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Evan Lumbert (3-2) won the game with six innings thrown, two runs and six strikeouts while Hunter McGarry had a three-inning save.
How it Happened:
- The Tigers struck first in the first as Tom Flacco put a one-out single to left, then stole second. Zach Piazza brought him around with an arcing single down the right field line to make it 1-0 Towson.
- FGCU tied the game in the following half-inning, scoring an unearned run off a Kohl Gilmore sacrifice fly.
- Towson got back the lead right away, beginning the top of the second with a Brad Powers triple to the right-center gap. Noah Cabrera grounded a single through the left side to bring in Powers, pushing the Tigers ahead 2-1.
- In the bottom of the third, FGCU used a walk, a wild pitch and a single to tie the contest at 2-2.
- Following a 1-2-3 inning by Gavin Weyman in the fourth, FGCU got its first lead in the fifth after a single then an RBI double by Alex Brait. The home team led 3-2 after five.
- Towson put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not get them home. FGCU added an insurance run in the seventh with a Joe Kinker RBI double and in the eighth on a Brait RBI single to lead 5-2, the eventual final score.
By the Numbers:
- Javon Fields saw his reached base streak of 14 games snapped today.
- Zach Piazza had his fifth multi-hit game of 2019.
