TOWSON, Md. – In the penultimate game of the 2018-19 regular season, the Towson University women's basketball team fell to Delaware 70-57 in SECU Arena.
Towson was led by
Danielle Durjan with 15 points while
Maia Lee grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the team. The Tigers move to 17-11 on the season, with an 11-6 mark in conference play. Towson is tied with Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for third place.
How it Happened
- After a slow start in the first two and a half minutes of the game, the Blue Hens scored the first bucket before the home team rolled out to a 15-8 lead.
- Delaware did not go quietly in the first quarter, with a 10-0 run to finish the period and take the lead 18-15.
- In the first minute of the second, the road team scored five more points to take a 23-15 lead forcing a Tiger timeout.
- Towson clawed back with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 25-21 with 7:18 left in the half. The Blue Hens scored one more point on a free throw and Danielle Durjan cut the lead to three with four minutes remaining.
- Delaware went on a 7-0 run to end the second, entering the halftime leading by 10, up 33-23.
- The Tigers struggled from the field in the second, with an 18.8 shooting percentage and 20 percent from three.
- Towson entered the second half strong, outscoring the Blue Hens 21-10. Nukiya Mayo scored the opening bucket out of the halftime and the Tigers took a 10-2 run in the first five minutes of the third.
- With 4:10 left in the quarter, Ryan Holder went to the line and tied the game up for the third time, 37-37 and Towson had a shot at regaining the lead.
- After back-and-forth trips to the free throw line, neither team scored from the 2:33 mark until 54 seconds were left in the period. A layup from Holder tied the game once again, before Kionna Jeter took the lead for the Tigers by one.
- A 3-of-15 shooting slump put the home team in a tough spot in the fourth quarter.
- Delaware took the lead back in the first 45 seconds of the last period, before Towson tied it up with 8:48 to go.
- Towson did not take the lead again, although coming close to tying it once more, after Q. Murray cut the lead to two.
- The Tigers trailed by six with 3:01 on the clock and time to close the gap with only two possessions necessary to tie it. The Blue Hens had another thing in mind, scoring eight points to Towson's one in the final three minutes.
Inside the Numbers
- This is the Tigers' third-straight game scoring under 60 points. In 10 games this season Towson has scored less than 60 points, before tonight's game the team was averaging 69.4 points per game.
- Senior Maia Lee's 17 rebounds were her career-high, three more than previously recorded 14 rebounds earlier this year.
- This was Lee's seventh game this season with double-figure rebounds.
- Fellow senior Danielle Durjan has dropped 10 or more points in four of the last five games. Against Delaware she made three-consecutive three-point buckets to start the night.
- Nukiya Mayo has now recorded double-figure points in 23 games this season. The junior was averaging 14.5 points per game entering the night.
- Delaware's 39 bench points are the most an opponent has scored against the Tigers since Hofstra's bench scored 34 earlier this season.
