TOWSON, Md. – Junior defender
Sami Chenoweth of the Towson University women's lacrosse team has been named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List announced Thursday afternoon. This is the second wave of additions to the watch list.
Chenoweth leads the nation in caused turnovers and has since February 27. She is averaging 4.09 per game, coming off an outing at No. 10 James Madison where she collected four.
The Manchester, Maryland native entered the year as an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Honorable Mention. In 2018 she was named to the All-CAA Second Team, IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic First Team, Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American and an Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America Team selection.
Chenoweth started all 21 games last season and has started all 11 this year for the Tigers. In 2019 she has 26 ground balls and six draw controls along with 45 caused turnovers. She leads the conference in caused turnovers and is seventh in ground balls per game with 2.36 per game.
This is the third straight season Towson has had a player on the Tewaaraton Watch List, Chenoweth joins
Olivia Conti who was in the first round of announcements. Last year Conti was on the list and in 2017 Kaitlin Montalbano was selected.
The final 25 nominees will be announced on April 25 and five finalists for both the men and women will be announced on May 9. The Tewaaraton Award is presented to the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States each year. The selection committees are made up of premiere collegiate coaches and are appointed by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Chenoweth and the Tigers return to action tomorrow, Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. against Elon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.
