Ricky Fried Joins Towson Women’s Lacrosse as Assistant Coach

TOWSON, Md. - Former Team USA and Georgetown head coach Ricky Fried has been named the new assistant coach for the Towson University women's lacrosse team, announced by head coach Kristen Carr on Wednesday.

"I'm incredibly grateful and excited to welcome Ricky to our Tiger Family," said Carr. "Ricky is passionate about lacrosse and cares deeply about his players. With over 30 years of coaching experience - including head and assistant coaching stops at Georgetown, with the USA National Team, and club and high school programs - Ricky brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership and perspective that will inspire our team to reach new heights every day."

Fried joins Towson following two decades (2005-2024) at the helm of the Georgetown University women's lacrosse program after two years as an assistant coach with the Hoyas. Under his leadership, Fried accumulated a 196-156 overall record and a 94-31 record in Big East regular season play. The winningest coach in program history, Fried led Georgetown to seven Big East regular season titles, took seven trips to the Big East Championship – winning the championship in 2010 and 2019 – and advanced to the NCAA tournament nine times, reaching the NCAA quarterfinals twice.

"I am honored and excited to join the Towson women's lacrosse program and am thrilled to work alongside Kristen to help bring her vision to life," said Fried. "Coaching is my passion, and I look forward to collaborating with the staff and student-athletes as we continue building on the strong foundation Kristen has established and striving for sustained success."

Fried coached 23 All-Americans, a National Goalie of the Year, two Big East Attackers of the Year, four Midfielders of the Year and five Defensive Players of the Year, along with 110 All-Big East First and Second Team selections. Fried and his staff won Big East Staff of the Year on two occasions.

While at Georgetown, Fried was also part of four world championship teams with the U.S. Women's National Team program. He was an assistant coach for the 2009 team and the coach for the 2013 and 2017 World Cup championship teams. He led the U.S. to the gold medal in the inaugural lacrosse competition at The World Games 2017 in Poland, where Carr started as a defender. Carr additionally played for Team USA in 2013 and 2017 under Fried's leadership.

Prior to joining Georgetown, Fried was an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University for nine seasons (1994-2002). While there, he served as a recruiting coordinator and aided in transforming Hopkins into a Top 20 Division I program after shifting from a Division III program. Before Fried arrived at Hopkins, he served as an assistant coach at the Gilman School, his alma mater, for two years (1992-1994).

A Maryland native, Fried graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 1988. Fried was an All-American midfielder for the men's lacrosse team. In his senior year, he served as a team captain and was named the team's Most Valuable Player and earned the team's Leadership Award. Fried was named to the UMBC's All-Time Team in 1990. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally for the Philadelphia Wings (1989-1992, 1997) and the Baltimore Thunder (1993-1994).

Within the women's lacrosse community, Fried has also held several titles. He has served as vice-president and on the board of directors of the IWLCA, he was also chair of the Regional All-American Committee, and a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy Committee. He is also the recipient of the Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial Award, recognizing lifetime achievement in the game of women's lacrosse. Fried also serves as the Girls' Director of True Lacrosse, a lacrosse club for youth and high school athletes.

Fried resides in Columbia, Maryland with his wife, Halyna, and his two children, Jack and Paige.
