Baseball Wins CAA Series Despite Sunday Defeat vs. Delaware

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (10-29, 5-7 CAA) has a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series win despite an 10-3 setback vs. Delaware (14-25, 6-9 CAA) on Sunday afternoon.

Towson had an early 1-0 lead after three innings, plus had a 2-1 advantage after five, but Delaware's six-run sixth inning ultimately proved decisive.

Key Stats:
  • Dirk Masters recorded hits in his first three at-bats, finishing 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Zach Piazza was 1-for-2, recording a double, a walk and two RBI.
  • Connor Coyle (1-1) kept Delaware scoreless in the first three innings but got the loss, having three runs, two earned, surrendered in five frames with three strikeouts.
  • For Delaware, Austin Colmery had a pair of triples to go 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Starter Joey Silan (2-3) got the win, throwing six innings with three runs and nine strikeouts, with Derek Wakeley getting the save on the final three innings pitched.
How it Happened:
  • Towson got on the board first with two consecutive hits: Dirk Masters hit through the left side and advanced to second on an error.  Zach Piazza brought Masters in with a scorching line drive up the middle for a single to make it 1-0.
  • Delaware tied the game in the top of the fourth on a ground ball error in the infield to make it 1-1.
  • The home team went back ahead in the bottom of the fifth.  Javon Fields drew a one-out walk and stole second.  Masters grounded the ball past the shortstop on the left side to bring in Fields and push Towson back up 2-1.
  • Next half-inning, Delaware got the bases loaded with one out.  Zach Miller found the right-center gap on a fly ball for a two-run single.  Next batter after a wild pitch, Zach Lesher hit a ground ball past a diving fielder for a two-run single.  An RBI triple and sacrifice fly completed a six-run inning to give Delaware a 7-2 advantage.  The Blue Hens scored another run in the seventh for an 8-2 lead.
  • The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the seventh off a Piazza sacrifice fly, but did not get closer in the game.  Delaware added two more in the ninth and won 10-3.
Inside the Numbers:
  • With a double, Brad Powers increased his reached-base streak to 14 games and his hitting streak to six games.
  • Towson has won its last two CAA series, taking two of three from Hofstra last weekend.
