Baseball Comes Back to Defeat UMBC for Season Sweep

TOWSON, Md. – In a wild, back-and-forth game at Schuerholz Park, the Towson University baseball team (11-29) came back in the eighth inning, taking the lead on a Dirk Masters RBI single to score Tom Flacco, to defeat UMBC (19-19) 8-7.
 
The game saw Towson rally with two runs to tie in the bottom of the seventh, then, after trailing in the top of the eighth, score twice to have a one-run advantage in the ninth.  Jake Pecilunas shut the door in the ninth to secure the mid-week victory.
 
Towson wins its third game in its last four contests and is 7-3 since April 10th.
 
Key Stats:
  • All nine batters in the Towson starting lineup hit safely, including four Tigers with multi-hit performances.
  • Tom Flacco hit 3-for-3 with his first home run and a walk, scoring twice and coming a triple short of the cycle.  Isaiah Winikur hit 2-for-4 with a triple and a run while Zach Piazza was 2-for-3, scoring a run.  Richard Miller hit his third home run of the season while Noah Cabrera brought in two runs, including an RBI triple.
  • On the pitching side, Dallas Repine retired his first 10 batters, then allowed a home run in a no-decision.  The win went to Kody Reeser (2-3), who pitched the eighth, while Jake Pecilunas had a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
  • UMBC hit three home runs in the game, including Terrence Pinkston going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Reliever Max Goron (2-2) got the loss, throwing the final 2.1 innings with four runs allowed.
How it Happened:
  • In the bottom of the second, Richard Miller drove a two-out pitch to the deepest part of center field for his third home run of the season, giving a Towson a 1-0 advantage.
  • Terrence Pinkston rode the wind in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left to tie the game.  Later, Colin Casey hit a two-run home run to right to push UMBC ahead 3-1.
  • After Zach Piazza hit a single to left to begin the bottom of the fourth, Noah Cabrera crushed a ball to the right-center alley for a triple, scoring Piazza and cutting the deficit in half.
  • UMBC responded with a three-run double by AJ Wright, all unearned runs, in the top of the fifth to go up 6-2.
  • The first at-bat of the bottom half of the fifth, Tom Flacco sent a ball flying between the flagpole and the scoreboard in right field for his first home run of the season.  Later, Cabrera hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to bring Towson within two at 6-4.
  • Towson tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with Dirk Masters scoring on a wild pitch.  The same batter, Brad Powers landed a ball in deep right-center field for a triple, bringing in another run to tie the game at 6-6.
  • UMBC got back the advantage in the next half-inning with a solo home run to go ahead 7-6.
  • Towson got the necessary runs in the last half of the eighth, starting by getting the bases loaded with no outs.  Javon Fields grounded into a double play, which allowed a runner to score.  The very next pitch, Masters hacked at a pitch through the hole on the left side, scoring Flacco to give Towson an 8-7 lead.
  • In the top of the ninth, Jack Finn reached on a single to right.  Jake Pecilunas took over from there, inducing a pair of pop outs, then picking off Finn at first to end the game.  Towson took the 8-7 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Towson's last three wins have all been comeback victories.
  • Towson has swept the season series vs. UMBC having won 7-2 in Catonsville last Tuesday.
  • Brad Powers extended his reached base streak to 15 games and his hitting streak to seven games.  Each are the longest streaks of their kind on Towson this season.
  • Isaiah Winikur has reached base his last seven games while Richard Miller has reached his last six contests.
