TOWSON, Md. – Despite home runs from
Isaiah Winikur and
Brad Powers, the Towson University baseball team (11-30, 5-8 CAA) fell in the series opener to William & Mary (24-18, 6-10 CAA) 5-2 in a game moved up due to weather concerns.
Towson trailed 3-1 after seven innings when a William & Mary two-run home run in the top of the eighth gave the visitors a four-run lead. Powers's ninth inning home run was not enough for the comeback attempt.
Key Stats:
- Isaiah Winikur had a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including his first home run in his collegiate career in the third inning. Brad Powers hit his fourth home of the season in the bottom of the ninth, finishing 1-for-4.
- Despite the loss, Josh Seils (2-6) had a strong start, throwing 7.2 innings with four runs, only three earned, and five strikeouts. Only three of the five runs against Towson were earned against the team.
- For William & Mary, Matthew Trehub hit a home run to complete his afternoon 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. The win went to starter Wade Strain (4-3), going seven innings with one run and four strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- William & Mary got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second, piecing together a walk, two singles and a fielder's choice for two runs and a 2-0 advantage.
- Isaiah Winikur earned his first home run of his Towson career, sending a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall for a solo blast, bringing the Tigers within one at 2-1.
- The visitors got that run back in the top of the fourth after a two-out triple followed by an infield single, sending the Tribe up 3-1.
- After three straight scoreless innings for both teams, William & Mary added to its lead in the top of the eight with a two-run home run by Matthew Trehub to lead 5-1.
- Towson's last gasp came in the bottom of the ninth as Brad Powers sent a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run, but the Tigers fell 5-2.
Inside the Numbers:
- Brad Powers increased his hit streak to eight games and reached base streak to 16, each the longest for the Tigers this season.
- This game was moved up due to expected inclement weather in the Towson area. The original start time was supposed to be 3 p.m.; it was moved up to 12 p.m.
