TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (4-24, 1-4 CAA) earned its first conference victory over the league favorite and first-place team Elon (17-14, 6-2 CAA) 7-3 off a dominant seven-inning start from
Gavin Weyman.
Weyman (1-5) went seven innings with only an unearned run as the Tigers scored seven runs off 15 hits, holding off a late Elon comeback attempt to secure the win.
Key Stats:
- Gavin Weyman earned his first victory of the season, going 7+ innings with an unearned run and six strikeouts. John Cranston earned his first career save with Towson, finishing the ninth with the tying run on deck.
- All 10 batters that came to the plate for Towson hit safely. Zach Piazza was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base while Brad Powers finished 3-for-5 with a run and RBI. Trey Martinez brought two runs in during a 1-for-3 afternoon.
- For Elon, Joe Satterfield hit 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. The loss went to George Kirby (5-1), who pitched four innings with five runs and five strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- Following a 1-2-3 inning to begin by Gavin Weyman, Towson struck first with Zach Piazza doubling off the center field wall, then Brad Powers lining a single to right to bring in Piazza and make it 1-0 Tigers.
- As Weyman continued to hold off Elon, Towson notched a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With first and second and one out, Trey Martinez lined a single to left to bring in Jack Rotteveel. Two batters later, Javon Fields fired a line drive to right for a single, getting Trent Gast-Woodard home for a 3-0 Towson advantage.
- The rally continued into the bottom of the fifth as Towson got the bases loaded with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Rotteveel put a suicide squeeze down and reached as the tag at the plate was late. Gast-Woodard followed with reaching on an error at third to bring in another run. Martinez was next up, dropping a suicide squeeze down to score Noah Cabrera. Towson's three-run inning pushed the Tigers ahead 6-0.
- Tom Flacco joined the hit club in the bottom of the seventh as he got a shallow pop up in between the pitcher and second, scoring Rotteveel to get the Towson lead to 7-0.
- Elon got its first run in the eighth after a pair of errors and a wild pitch as Towson held a 7-1 lead.
- Elon put together a late ninth inning comeback attempt, getting two runs across on a Joe Satterfield single to right. John Cranston entered two batters later with two on and two out, striking out Ty Aycock to finish the game. Towson earned the 7-3 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Towson's 15 hits are the most for a single game this year. The Tigers had 14 hits back on March 12th at George Washington.
- Brad Powers reached base in his eighth consecutive game.
- Elon was predicted to finish first in the CAA in the preseason coaches poll.
