CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Towson University baseball team (13-35, 6-13 CAA) kept close with the Colonial Athletic Association's second place team in the series opener, but fell at Charleston (30-19, 11-8 CAA) 4-2.
With the game tied 1-1 off solo home runs, including one by
Trey Martinez, Charleston scored three in the fourth to take the lead. Towson attempted to rally in the eighth off a
Javon Fields RBI single to put the potential tying run to the plate, but the Tigers did not get closer.
Key Stats:
- Hitting his third home run of the season, Trey Martinez was 1-for-3 in the game. Javon Fields finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while Richard Miller had a pinch hit double, scoring in the eighth inning.
- Despite the defeat, Josh Seils (2-7) threw seven innings with four runs and two strikeouts in his start, with Matt Watters pitching a scoreless eighth.
- For Charleston, Danny Wondrack concluded 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double, scoring twice. The win went to starter Griffin McLarty (7-4), who went seven innings with a run and 11 strikeouts. Nathan Ocker picked up his 11th save of the year, going scoreless in the ninth.
How it Happened:
- Charleston got on the board first in the bottom of the second, beginning with a Danny Wondrack left field double and followed by an RBI single from Logan McRae.
- Trey Martinez responded in a big way to lead off the third, crushing a ball over the left field wall for a solo home run, tying the game at 1-1.
- The home team went back ahead in the bottom of the fourth with a Wondrack leadoff solo home run. Later in the inning, a two-out sacrifice fly, on a nice running catch by Javon Fields, and a wild pitch that scored another runner made it 4-1 Charleston.
- The Tigers tried to put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as Jack Rotteveel singled and Dirk Masters walked to put two runners on, but a ground out finished the inning with no runs across.
- Towson's last gasp came in the eighth as Richard Miller notched a pinch hit double, then Fields grounded a single up the middle to bring Miller home. Charleston retired the next five batters in succession to win 4-2.
Inside the Numbers:
- With a walk, Dirk Masters has now reached base in his last 12 games.
- This is the ninth start, out of 12, where Josh Seils has thrown as least six innings, plus the fourth start where he has gone a minimum of seven innings.
- Javon Fields earned his 16th multi-hit game of the season.
